Ancient Australia’s Connections – Egypt, Spain, France, UK and Cooloon

In 1885 surveyor Edward Johnson gave the name Cooloon to the entrance of the Tweed River – an area today known as Tweed Heads/Coolangatta, the “Twin Towns” marking the state border between New South Wales and Queensland on Australia’s east coast. tweed

Cooloon was the Ngarakbal name for the blue fig tree that grew in the area….Cooloon was also the name of the one of the tribes [or family clans] that occupied the area before invasion – today this Ngarakbal family choose to spell their name Calhum [or Calham] and most of them still reside in their ancestral estates on Ngarakbal/Githabal lands.

Many of the ancestral Aboriginal people became known by the English name of the first settlers whom they lived and worked with and many of the geographical place names in Australia today are still Aboriginal words of the local ancestral dialect tribes [families] who traditionally occupy the lands…Cooloon was an English  butchering of  the name of the tribe – the Culham [family] – who’s ancestral area included Tweed Heads in what is traditionally known as Ngarakbal ‘country’ …During the systematic relocation process of removing ancestral aboriginal peoples from their land, the remnant survivors of the Culham [family] were [eventually] sent to ‘Mulli Mulli’ Aboriginal Station near Woodenbong, which is the ancestral ‘country’ of the Githabal, who are their traditional marriage clan….and lots of Culham descendants reside there today.

rightsMany of the Ngarakbal/Githabal Elders were instrumental in achieving the success of the Aboriginal Civil Rights Campaigns which were ratified by government in 1967, granting aboriginal people legal ‘human’ status instead of the Flora and Fauna classification they had lived under since invasion….The Civil Rights campaign had taken over a decade to achieve…many of the Elders who ‘gave their all’ in that campaign had worked first hand with the crowns surveyors who mapped their ancestral country – so, they knew the Aboriginal names on the maps were very important to show that THEY were the original inhabitants of Australia….This worried the crown greatly, as it threatened their legal tenure to Terra Nullius….So the crowns way of handling this problem was to start the renaming process of the geographical, or geospatial data…Change the maps…..a ‘classic’ administrative process utilised since Roman times.

Flinders Chart 1814 - showing the entire east coast of Australia as New South Wales
Flinders Chart 1814 – showing the entire east coast of Australia as New South Wales

Renaming geographical names on maps has been the systematic invasion process of the crown throughout the commonwealth countries….after all that’s how they claimed the Australian east coast from the pre-crown Spanish tenure and then rescinded the Dutch tenure of the Australian western lands…In these contemporary times, in order to retain tenure post-Civil Rights [1967] and then Native Title [1992] they systematically move shire boundaries, or change the names of towns or important geographical features by removing the aboriginal names, or the ancestral dialect those names are attributed too…Cooloon was one of the towns this ‘Roman’ administrative sleight of hand was applied to.

“Cooloon survived as the official name, though rarely used, until 1965, when in that same year the name was officially changed to Tweed Heads by the New South Wales [Geographical] Names Board”….[Keates]

Mt Brown Road - north west over duck creek - Richmond Range NSW
Mt Brown Road – north west over duck creek – Richmond Range NSW

You also find the names of Mountains and significant places in Australia have English names from the surveying day’s too….for example;  Mount Brown on the Richmond Range….Mt Brown is an extremely important djurebil [sacred site] from the Creation Bootheram [Dreaming] of the Ngarakbal/Githabal moieties….Mount Brown is where the birds all flew from, in the ‘Dreaming’  [or Bootheram, as the Ngarakbal/Githabal call it] ….and each bird who flew from Mount Brown became the totemic creator of the various ‘Bird Tribes’ [Feathered Serpent Traditions] where each species landed…..This totemic attribution can be seen in the Aboriginal Site Registration of Mount Warning/Wollumbin of which the totemic creator is a Turkey….in the site registration it state’s “Turkey flew from Mount Brown”…and Turkey created the Ngarakbal tribe of Gullival..[see previous post Significance of Mt Warning ].

At the time of the original surveying and mapping the Ngarakbal/Githabal ancestral area was pristine natural rainforest….Beautiful rainforest land, heaven to a Ngarakbal person, but to an Englishman, foreboding…-

“The Tweed at that time was practically impenetrable to the settlers travelling overland. Only a barely discernable mailman’s track wound its way through precipitous mountain ridges to the nearest settlement of Casino on the Richmond….Miles of undulation clothed in thick moist rainforest, filled with razor sharp Lawyer Cane [vines ] gouging at the unwary horsemen’s face and arms .Overhead the canopy enclosed the darkness and  exuded an ever present odour of decay”…[Keates]

Mount Brown was on the designated Mail Route that ran from Cooloon/Tweed Heads to Casino in the late 1800’s….The tracks were treacherous for English settlers, but they were paradise for the ancestral Ngarakbal peoples….in those times it was common for an Aboriginal man to be given the job of delivering the mail….A local Aboriginal man was accustomed to the terrain of his homeland, and more importantly, he would not be killed as he travelled through his ancestral country, where as a White man would.

king Brown -WoolumbaJohnny Brown was the English name that first settlers gave to one of the Ngarakbal Aboriginal mailmen and his ‘run’ was from Cooloon [Tweed Heads] to  Casino, located on the other side of the Richmond Range…The mail track took in a portion of what is now known as Mount Brown, which is an extremely important djurebil [sacred site] of creation of the Bird Tribes in Ngarakbal/Githabal Lore…It is the Bootheram ‘beginning’ point from where all the birds flew from to make the tribes…..Bootheram is the Ngarakbal/Githabal word for the DREAMING, and, Johnny Brown-Ngarakbal knew his Lore, his Land and his Language, and he also knew the surveyor, Edward Johnson who had mapped Ngarakbal land for the old Queen…

“Between the years 1844 and the arrival of William McGregor and his four boatmen, Henry Brown, Alfred Gray, John Whelan, Willam Parkes and their families in1870 to establish a pilot station at the mouth of the Tweed River, the area remained an enigma and a remote outstation of the fledgling New South Wales colony”…[Keates] .

In the mid 1800’s the old Queen [ Victoria] had given orders to all her surveyor to only use the local Aboriginal names of places on the new maps they were creating….there was a legal reason for this….The Dutch still held three quarters of the continent to the west and had used Dutch words on their maps…and the Portuguese had mapped the East Coast in the 1500’s and had used Spanish words…the Dauphin map of 1536, below, was charted before the discovery of Longitude…

Dauphin map - 1536
Dauphin map – 1536

The Spanish had been defeated by the French and the maps had been taken into their possession…But those maps were reproductions from ancient Khemit [Egyptian] maps….and so, to claim the ‘Great Southern Land’  Napoleon had to invade Egypt to capture those maps for the French… of note is that Khemit is the original name of Egypt before Roman invaders changed their maps too…and of course England has Roman links…

Napoleon in Egypt 1867
Napoleon in Egypt 1867

The maps to Banyan [Bird] Land, aka Australia,  were held in the Khemit libraries of  Alexandria from their long ago expeditions – 4000 years long ago and more – Khemit maps to GOLD MINES – Napoleon needed those maps, or rather to destroy them before anyone else claimed the “Land of the Red Princes”, or, before he could claim it for France….

So, then His-story goes that the English [Roman descendants]  declared war on the French against Napoleon,  and in due course defeated him and then they had the Khemit maps in their possession again…..The east coast of Australia was ‘up for grabs, well, according to the Roman descendants, the English, that is…

First_fleet_drawingThen, La Perouse from France [who still had copies of the Portuguese maps Napoleon had captured] raced Captain Cook to Tahiti, purportedly in pursuit of mapping the Venus transit so as to define longitude , which is what the ‘accepted’ academic texts tell us…but, the actual reason for this race between La Perouse and Cook was to travel on to claim Australia – but La Perouse arrived three days too late, Cook was already there – and so Cook claimed the east coast for England as instructed by the Queen….

And what of the Egyptian [Khemit] maps?…Well, that’s the story of another English war isn’t it?….actually,  there is more, but that too will come to light in the near future from good people whose work in this field is far more qualified to tell of it than I….

It is also of note that Aboriginal men from the east coast Reserves had been sent to fight in the Boer War…after it ended in 1902 the crown left them all in Africa…The Australian Light-horse stress were also abandoned….The crowns excuse for this travesty was so as to prevent possible disease coming back to Australia….The east coast Aboriginal men were classified as Flora and Fauna by the occupying British..This was a perfect opportunity to prevent breeding age Aboriginal men from returning to their ancestral lands….

Anyway, back to Ngarakbal/Githabal country and the His-story of the Australian East Coast invasion…..Well then,  the old Queen [Victoria] had been advised by her counsel to use the Aboriginal words of the local ancestral moieties – so her surveyors dutifully befriended the ancestral peoples and garnered their assistance in fulfilling her orders, aboriginal people like Johnny Brown….The reason was that [the crown thought] it a way of proving that they had been there first, and that they could prove this because the ancestral aboriginal ‘tongue’ was on their English maps…In their opinion this would serve as evidence that they discovered Australia’s east coast first –  before the Portuguese had, and [if they could ‘capture’ them] also before the Khemit had too….

Pietier Goos East Indies 1690
Pietier Goos East Indies 1690

In other words “Bluff it”, by re-mapping the place and destroying the records of any maps the others had ever created, and if that meant war, then that’s what happened…..Banyan Land [of the Red Princes] was full of Gold and that would fund the wars…

So….That is my version of the crowns invasion in a nutshell…In reality it’s a sad His-story of War and death….conquering and claiming… and it worked for a while, but is rapidly failing…Claiming by Re-naming is one of the crowns fortes…..and I have personally had first-hand experience of this in order to be able to tell this story now….specifically with Mount Warning and it’s geographical renaming as Wollumbin…

Apart from my own research and lobby [to aid the Ngarakbal/Githabal] I have met lots of people around the global village that also have the old maps and  amassed mountains of verifiable proof of archaeological sites of the Portuguese and the Khemit/Egyptians in Australia…check out Sonya Vangelders work on the Gosford Glyphs which casts long overdue light onto the Khemit expeditions, which also visited Ngarakbal/Githabal lands…along with Professor Cann’s work on MtDNA which uneqivicably verifies the original ancestral aboriginal people claims that they were here before all of them – 350 thousand years longer – which blitzes the accepted academic benchmark  texts that tell us of Aboriginal occupation being only 70,000 years…..

That  Australia, the ancestral land of the Bird Tribes [Feathered Serpent Traditions], has been coveted for its mineral wealth for thousands and thousands of years is not surprising news, but that they actually had operating trade agreements with the Dutch, the Portuguese and the Khemit  to name a few, is , and thanks to more good peoples works this also is coming to light….

Though attempts have been made to eradicate this important information of prior occupation and trade – like the names and places on the maps being scrubbed out by administration or swept away in the wars – the global village has woken up to just how much ’His-story’ gets corrupted, sanitised and spoon fed to the masses,  and what a brutal and unnecessary thing war was….Forgiveness and compassion are something that the whole planet can learn from the Australian Bird Tribes, along with their Bootheram lores of sharing and mindfulness of resources, and most importantly NEVER altering the truth…

Good Lore’s – Ancient Time tested Lore’s – How else can we learn to ‘care for country’, or this planet,  and become better human beings if we don’t keep the truth pure…and learn from looking at our past mistakes.

Here’s a beautiful Bootheram from the Ngarakbal/Githabal lore…It is related by Mr Joe Calhum, a survivor who was systematically removed from his ancestral lands of Cooloom [Tweed Heads] to eventually reside at ‘Mulli Mulli’ Aboriginal Station near Woodenbong….He told this Bootheram as his part in the Civil Rights Campaigns to free his people from the suffering of being classified as Flora and Fauna – not human- by the crown…He’s one of the unsung heroes of Australia…an exemplary HUMAN,  who ‘held’ [in his turn] the Bootheram Lore [unchanged as Lore decrees] as a true ‘Custodian of the Land’ must….Lamington Plateau is featured in this Bootheram, it’s a chain of remnant volcanic mountains behind Tweed Heads marking the New South Wales/Queensland geographical border….Remember, Bootheram is Metaphorical…it appears a fairy-tale about Dogs and Kangaroos and Humans, but it’s not…it has layers and deep meaning…..See if you can ponder  the ‘truth’ in this ancient Lore…..

Joe Culham of Woodenbong

The Two Dogs – Burrajahnee & Inneeroogun A legend from the Lamington Plateau as told by Joe Calhum [Cooloom] of Woodenbong – pictured above – this story is a Bootheram Lore and must NEVER be changed.

“Where the north-eastern border of NSW & the south-eastern border of Qld meet lies the rugged MacPherson Range, and on this range there is a plateau known to the white man as Lamington Plateau. Many long years ago in the Dreamtime, in a very young world, there lived an old man and his nephew on the Lamington Plateau. The Old man and his nephew had two dogs of which they were very fond. The dogs were named Burrajahnee and Inneroogun.

One day Burrajahnee and Inneroogun saw a kangaroo.  They chased it down the side of the plateau.  When the old man and his nephew saw the dogs chasing the kangaroo, they called out to them,… “Burrajahnee and Inneroogun, come back to us!”……

The dogs took no notice for they were excited by the chase.  Some people from a tribe that lived near the plateau also saw the dogs chasing the kangaroo.  When they saw the kangaroo running towards the lagoon, they placed two nets in the pathway.  The kangaroo was big and strong.  He got through the first net, he got through the second net,  jumped into the lagoon and turned into a bunyip; and there he lives to this day.

Burrajahnee and Inneroogun also got through the first net, but they were caught in the second one. The people who had tried to catch the kangroo killed the two dogs, saying to each other “they will serve us as food as well as the Kangaroo. We shall light a fire and cook them”.  And this they did.

When the dogs failed to return the old man and nephew were sad, because they knew some evil had befallen them.  They went to look for their dogs, and tracked them down the side of the plateau to the place where the fire had been lit, calling out “Burrajahnee and Inneroogun come back to us”. Great was the anger of the old man and his nephew when they found their dogs had been killed and cooked.  The old man sent a big cyclone to destroy the people who had killed Burrajahnee and Inneroogun.

The uncle and the nephew picked up the dogs, wrapped them in bark, and carried them reverently back to the plateau. Whenever any part of the dogs, such as a foreleg or foot, fell off as they were being carried back to the plateau the placed was named after it and is known by the same name to this day.

On the way back to the plateau they came to a waterfall.  They climbed to the top and sat down and rested placing their burdens on the ground. One of them faced in one direction and the other facing in the opposite direction. There the remains of the two dogs Burrajahnee and Inneroogun were turned into stone.

Those two dogs are still to be seen at the top of the waterfall. One facing in one direction and the other in the opposite direction.

The stone dogs are sacred. No man dares to touch them. To the tribe of people who are descendants of the old man the stone dogs will always be sacred.

That is the story of the two dogs Burrajahnee and Inneroogun, and the part of the plateau were they began to chase the kangaroo is called Goonbundah”…..Joe Calhum/Cooloon

Genesis of Genocide….and the art of Wrestling

Aboriginal Australians have produced some of the finest sportsmen and women in the world…what many don’t know is the part that sport played in keeping the Lore alive during the colonisation process… Forced onto Reserves by the Native Police force, the Ngarakbal warriors kept morale and Lore breathing at Brunswick Heads Reserve – Byron Bay- until it was wiped off the maps by the crown.

cape byron

The Ngarakbal / Githabal people of what is now the Byron Bay Tweed Kyogle area know a lot about the history of the colonisation of Australia…they were there….their grandparents and great grandparents were forced into created Reserves; or exterminated…Today many of the Reserves have been removed from the maps….but they haven’t been removed from the memory of the people….and the traditional art of Wrestling played an important role…
On the East Coast of Australia– New South Wales as it was all known then – the enforced Aboriginal relocation process was implemented over a period of 50 years before the crown moved to take over the west of the continent from the Dutch…..Oceania Early Discoveries

Commencing in 1848, when the Native Police force was formed, and until the late 1800’s the focus of these forces was primarily to ‘round-up’ the aboriginal population and to assist the crown in surveying and gazetting the East Coast into States [Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania] in preparation for colonisation by free settlers….at this time the western three quarters of the continent was still under Dutch rule

English had only claimed the eastern coast of Australia, so naturally,340 Native Troopers Dispersing a Camp the East Coast tribes were the most brutally hit by the invasion forces….The crown had commenced carving the country up in the 1860’s after removing the ancestral people…removal often meant extermination of entire tribes…they then began selling land to the first ‘free’ settlers at specially organised land auctions using the Crown Land Act along with each newly created state’s own legislation for the same – in New South Wales [NSW] this was the Robertson Lands Act – This paved the way for the East Coast ‘land grab’ to begin….

1880 crown lands sales2The crowns treasure vaults were filling from the sales of the ancestral estates, and the surviving original people were forced onto specifically created Reserves, Stations or Missions….Forty years later, the crown now had enough money to fund a war against Holland to take the western three quarters of the continent by force.. The Borer War was fought in Africa against the Dutch; and England won…the prize was the west Australian lands…… So now all of Australia could be remapped and renamed – no longer NEW HOLAND, it was becoming the commonwealth country of Australia, wholly held by the British….and “by 1901 as white colonialists were undergoing their rite of passage into nationhood, the original Australians were also participating in a rite of passage- but of quiet a different kind”…G. Souter .

1899 Boer war -British v dutchThis historical photo of Australian Troops training in 1899 in readiness to assist the British attempt to exert control over the Dutch in South Africa in the conflict known as the Boer War –  the political process of claiming and retaining control of Continents is dependant on maps & Geographic names and   APARTHEID processes
So, by 1901 the Aboriginal people lost all recognition for, and claim to, their own individual countries and their respective ancestral estates – by force of the crown….They were no longer known as the Ngarakbal, or the Githabal on the East Coast, or the Pinjantjatjar in the centre or the Ngarrindjerri in the south, or any of the other distinctive tribal countries that existed before invasion [ of which there were over 350 individual countries] ….Now, as part of the crowns invasion, claiming and renaming [the maps] process everyone was classified as just being Aboriginal, right across the continent – no distinctions…By 1901 the crown had successfully locked them all into Reserves, Missions and Stations and classified them as Flora and Fauna…’Operation Invasion’, complete….
On the East Coast the Native Police Forces were the initial administration body for the reserves…during this period [the first wave] the ancestral people had no option but to retreat and relocate…..if they didn’t they were terminated…..many battles were fought and many lives were lost endeavouring to hold their lands against the guns – they’d never seen guns…..yet to this day, the crown refuses to recognise that any wars were fought. Which can only be concieved a complete self-serving myopic view, as these following extracts from the governments Byron Bay Native Title reports reveal….
…”The first wave of the relocation process by the Native Police occurred in the early 1850’s ….. Documentary and oral accounts suggest the actions of the native mounted Police had a direct impact on the Aboriginal population numbers occupying the region. The Native Police were active in the area throughout the 1850’s and engaged in punitive raids”….[ Waters 1999;14 McKeown NSW-NTS 2005: 19]……………
“Oral accounts suggest further massacres occurred in the [native title] claim area at Suffolk Park, and further north at Hastings Point [Cudgera] and at Mount Warning as the Troopers returned north”…. [McKeown NSW-NTS 2005: 19 ; Reibe 1999: 97-99]

These reports are [as expected] very pro-crown; despite stacks of evidence within the Ngarakbal/Githabal Oral Lore about the epic battles with the invaders…but it challenges the crowns tenure; so it’s been quashed…..Anyway….., over time there was a second wave of administration where the Aboriginal Reserve’s management was transferred from the Native Police and taken up by church groups…..The respective faiths [churches] obtained leases to land and created the ‘Missions’ …..and some of these were so large that they were known as ‘Stations’ and they held stock belonging to the crown….It is of note too that most of the church leases were for 27 years, after which time they kicked the Aboriginal people out and sold the land for profit….

North NSW Aboriginal Reserve closuresAnyway….The first wave of the invasion administration [the Native Police] had fought the wars against the ancestral people – reducing the population numbers……Then the second wave [the churches] enforced a new religion onto the people and it was the function of this second wave to break the ancestral knowledge apart and reprogram them….Children were taken and placed into separate Mission institutions to learn to speak English and worship a foreign god in the expectation that they would forget about their ancestral lore and language….Adult survivors were sent to Station Reserves and hired out by the police administration [ ironically re-titled the Aboriginal Protections Board ]…they were used as labourers for the first settlers, denied access to their children and punished if they spoke their language or followed their lore….They were allotted numbers [for ease of administration beside their ‘new’ English names] and they could not leave the reserves unless they had authorised administrative permission from the central administration office which was then the Armidale Police extract from State Archives of Aboriginal Reserve at Brunswick - 2029

This administration process served to sever entire families who were divided and sent to different Reserves, Mission’s or Stations – to break down the ancestral culture……if anyone who was [or had been] an antagonist survived, they would be relocated multiple times…sending them further and further away from their ancestral estate area and their family – often sending them interstate 1000’s of km because the legislations were harsher in the remoter unestablished areas of the colony away from prying eyes….it was brutal heartless administrative policy…..genocide by paper – the power of the pen…
Surviving men –warriors- were targeted the most severely throughout…..The lush landscape of the East Coast was deemed ‘ perfect for colonisation’…. for the Ngarakbal/Githabal men this meant many were sent cross border into Qld to a police labour camp known as Barambah….”a dumping ground for the lame, the halt and the incorrigible….the black criminals of the state”…W J Bleakley 1913
…”since the establishment of this settlement in 1904, it has been the dumping ground for natives of all classes from all parts of the state but principally those whose removal from undesirable environments on the fringe of civilisation became necessary for disciplinary reasons…”….W J Beakley 1934….
From Barambah, any antagonists or ‘troublemakers’ who still opposed the invading process would be punished and relocated yet again….often up into Far North Queensland or across to Military Reserves on the Sunshine Coast….some survivors got moved up to eight times….further and further away from their ‘country’ and their kin… Today that same reserve, Barambah, is called Cherbourg and it’s still the largest Reserve in Queensland, but it’s got a lot of beautiful people there with a lot of culture and lore and, surprisingly, compassion ….all survivors of a very dark history and despite this they hold no grudge against the white settlers….displaying a level of forgiveness that many [white] church going citizens could only hope to aspire too.
Back in Ngarakbal/Githabal country [now gazetted as the Tweed, Byron and Kyogle shires] the small reserves began to be ‘reclaimed’ and reallocated as crown land, or sold off by the churches….they just shut them down and moved everyone off into the more centralised Missions and Stations in less desirable country …..systematically heaping more and more people from all different places into ‘controllable’ space, and further and further away from their ancestral areas and their kin…..Overcrowding, deprivation and lack of sanitation caused illness, depression and death….population numbers dwindled and no-one seemed to care….the invasion process orders were on schedule and the outcome was expected to be total genocide via assimilation, within three generations……

What many people today don’t realise is that there were lots and lots of small Reserves everywhere on the East Coast….Nor do they realise that they have been systematically removed from the maps – Sanitising the history and the evidence – Nor do they know about the important role that the sport of Wrestling played at the Reserves…but the Ngarakbal/Githabal do….their role as the keeps of the first portion of the transcontinental songline requires that they keep the historical Bootheram [Lore]…and they do………
Now, the Reserve at Tweed Heads is well known and documented…however it was also reclaimed and is now a shopping centre, hospital complex and a housing estate – it even makes a mention in the box office hit “Muriels Wedding” – where a sleazy councillor takes the reserve away to redevelop – the sub-plot for the film was based on a true story ……but, here is the one the crown tried to hide – probably due to a Native Title claim in the late 1990’s over Byron Bay
Anyway….

for the use of the Aboriginals -Brunswick VillageAt Brunswick Heads [Byron Bay] there was a small Reserve, It was the southern administration facility to the northern one at Tweed Heads… and; thankfully, despite the best efforts of the invasion process, the lore, land and language survived intact….and, how they did that is another story for another time, and its an awesome inspirational story too… I will however, tell you a bit about Charlotte Williams who was sent to the Brunswick reserve as a young woman….
Above is a close up of the Brunswick Reserve, and below is picture of the village of Brunswick, it shows the same Reserve which was wiped off the maps….this is one of the crowns own maps.  Note it has cancelled written across it….its that simple – they just cancel it and remap a new one….this happens with all their maps.1906 Mullumbimby Aboriginal reserve
Charlotte Williams [nee Brown] – Granny Charlotte as her descendants call her- was one the Ngarakbal survivors shuffled by the Administrators…She was a noted midwife, and this granted her ‘authorised’ travel permits between the Brunswick and Tweed Reserves….at that time no-one could leave the reserves unless they had written authorisation and every aboriginal person had been allocated a number – Charlotte had a number and an important purpose…into her was entrusted the Bootheram [Dreaming Lore]….. The crowns administrative policy was strict – “No number, No authorisation, No travel” – culminating in arrest and punishment if “No Paperwork” could be produced…for the Cultural Lore to survive it had to go underground…..This following extract was prepared in conjunction with the Native Title process of Byron Bay….however Charlottes descendants have never been recognised as originating from Byron Bay by the crown….the maps had been sanitised…..
“Charlotte Williams was an ‘ARAKWAL’ woman who, with her family in tow, frequently moved between the coast and the Nimbin area. For a time the Williams family lived at Middle Pocket near Mullumbimby and it has been reported that a woman known as Queen Charlotte performed domestic duties at homes between Skinners Shoot and Tyagarah in the period c.1925-30. Charlottes Williams clearly had traditional knowledge of the Byron Bay locality [e.g. the myth of the Fairy Emus and the song Wao] and a great deal of knowledge was passed on to her daughter Millie Boyd”….[Colins1990:45]

Women were the last to be relocated from the coastal Reserves  – deemed less troublesome…As a young woman Charlotte had been allowed to remain on the Brunswick Reserve in her ancestral lands but over time she was systematically relocated many times as well….Charlottes Father was a white man…[Aboriginal women were often exploited by the Administration]…  Her half Brothers had previously been sent to other Reserves….Tom [Close]was one of her half brother’s…He was sent to ‘Stony Gully’ Reserve near Nimbin and then onto Mulli Mulli Station….Charlottes Full-blood Ngarakbal warrior Grandfather – ‘Johnny Brown’- was relocated many times due to his opposition to the invasion….king Brown -WoolumbaHe eventually was sent to military Reserves located at Lake Cootharaba and Tin Can Bay near Fraser Island Queensland as punishment, but he sure gave the crown some hell before he was captured…. Also a story for another time…..Anyway, how does Wrestling come into all this???…..
Well, despite all the tragedy the Ngarakbal warriors, of which Johnny Brown was a senior Lore man, kept their spirits and their warrior skills alive whilst incarcerated at the Brunswick Reserve….and to do this [undetected] they used Sport…
The spirit of Sport is universal and it provided entertainment for the Native Police and the White Administration to watch….Among the most ancient of all sports are Wrestling and Running….Of course the warriors were denied their weapons which were traditionally used in their sport events….spear, boomerang and nulla nulla [club] throwing contests to demonstrate strength and proficiency were common before invasion… but the sport of wresting was something they could still do whilst held captive on the Reserves… it also meant they could train for combat.
So, let’s look at traditional wrestling….Now, the object of traditional wresting amongst the Ngarakbal was not to link or grip their opponent in such a way as to overpower them and make them helpless and unable to move…..It was instead the skill and agility in grappling with the opponent, to throw him to the ground clear without him holding you…..but, he could hold you as long as he could carry you….the craft taught combat skill, endurance, patience and timing
It works thus…..First there are three persons selected from the one totem tribe, and another three from another totem tribe…..for ease of explanation I will call the first group the Pelican Men and the second group the Emu men1890- byron Bay men Mitchel libraray PXA689no
This 1890 photo of Byron Bay Aboriginal Men appears in the book Time & Tide Again – Library of NSW PXA689 no.14…..
….”A clear ground, free from shrubs or rocks, is selected, a soft sandy spot. Before the contestants arrive, the members of the respective tribes congregate to witness and barrack for either side……then the men arrive, their bodies may or may not be smeared with oil and ochre…presently a person steps forward and he holds in his hand a boomerang and a small throwing nulla nulla [club]
He turns to the contestants, addressing them…” You are called upon today to uphold the honour of your tribe. One of you may win or take the prize”….and he holds before them the newly made boomerang and nulla nulla
These weapons are placed into the ground, like you would with cricket stumps/wickets at one end of the ring …..The referee then calls to the men who will defend these weapons…..[in this example] it’s the Pelican totem men who step forward…and their supporters shout encouragement…and they walk to the end of the ring that has the weapons standing upright in the ground.
The three Pelican totem men stand in front of the weapons, facing the opposing team members of the Emu totem who are standing ten to twenty metres back at the other end of the ring…..then the referee calls to the Emu totem men to take the weapons from the Pelican totem men
The first of the three Emu men walks forward towards the weapons and at half distance he is met by the first of the three Pelican men, who grapples with him to prevent him from coming closer to the weapons…..Now, let’s suppose the Emu man throws the Pelican man to the ground…He can now rush forward where he is met by the next Pelican man [number 2] who has come to defend the weapons… The Emu man now must wrestle with Pelican man -number 2…. and suppose he also throws him to the ground…. Emu man rushes on and is now met by Pelican man – number 3….and now the war begins….The third Pelican man strains every muscle to defend the prize and the honour of his tribe… he must prevent the Emu man from advancing to where the weapons are standing upright in the ground….They wrestle, both falling to the ground, and then rise….. The Emu totem man is getting nearer and nearer; he reaches out to take hold of the ‘nulla nulla’,….almost gets it, but his strength fails….He gives up and returns back to his team members with a feeling of defeat. Now… the second Emu totem man makes the attempt, but he may not have the skill or the strength to tackle the three Pelican totem defenders….but still, in honour of his tribe he will try….he also fails and must return to his team at the other end of the ring…….Now comes the third Emu totem man….instead of walking he runs and perhaps knocks the first Pelican totem defender down, then meets the second and throws him to the ground….Now he grapples with the third Pelican totem man, throws him to the ground and takes the ‘nulla nulla’ and returns to his team companions amidst cheering from his tribe….
Now they are given a rest….perhaps an hour or more.
The referee then takes the boomerang, and places it on the side of the Emu totem men….and says “Take the weapon from the Emu totem”
The first Pelican totem man goes forward and is met halfway by an Emu totem man, they begin wrestling and perhaps the Emu man lifts him and throws him upon his shoulder, and then carries him to the end of the ring back to his Pelican totem team…this means he lost – he doesn’t continue to wrestle with the others…..
So then, the second Pelican totem man also fails in the same manner…he can’t continue either….so, it’s up to the third Pelican totem man to defend his tribes honour and capture the boomerang….But he tries and also fails…..
Then the barrackers of the Emu tribe shout with joy, because the Emu totem men have won the prizes; the boomerang and the nulla nulla…
The Pelican totem men in their defeat will take it in good spirits and wave as a sign of friendship and of expressing desire to meet again in the future in a similar challenge…”….adapted from original by D. Unaipon
So…. it’s an attack and defend version of wrestling, running and endurance….and as you can see by the photo above, being placed in Reserves didn’t stop the Ngarakbal warriors from practicing their training….training for a war to defend their land…more on that later thou…..
Some of the more complex traditional games can involve up to 50 men who, using a wooden cross like object that is spun on the surface of the competition ground [moving it like a football between the teams] teaches the important skill of hunting agile game, like kangaroo, emu and wallaby….This ancestral game has also produced some of the best natural footballers in the world
Then there are other more complex gaming events that involve whole tribes gathering to compete….many of these game events will last an entire day, and some even longer….to an outsider these events appear to be war….but this is not the case…the object of these gatherings and sporting events is to solidify community ties and also serves the purpose of exchanging information that improves the skills of making boomerangs and spears…for the women it is a great opportunity to learn new weaving techniques and meet with kin…..but most importantly it was the opportunity to gather and entertain each other with the added bonus of maintaining the spirituality of the land and all it contains….
Upholding the Bootheram [Dreaming] Lore through performance, dance, song and oral tradition is one side of the lore….maintaining a living culture unbroken despite all attempts to wipe it off the map or lock it away to die in Reserves requires stamina…No…the culture never died…it adapted…Taking the best qualities of whatever it was exposed to, maintaining morale and morals, applying the lore’s of healthy competition, endurance, skill and patience…aka, the art of wrestling.

Ancient arrivals to the Land of the Bird Tribes…Part 2

Many People from many lands have come to the Land of the Bird Tribes…In Part One we looked at the Pre-Crown arrivals of the Dutch, Portuguese and the Egyptian, to name a few…..and now we come to the arrival of the Three Brothers – escaping the war in the centre of the word.

galleon2

The Three Brothers Bootheram was also told by Mr Alex Vesper in the 1950’s Civil Rights era…..  The Vesper family are one of the numerous direct bloodline descendants of the Ngarakbal/Githabal – from the ancestral Mother Clans of the Bird Tribes…..Today there are over 500 living descendants from that bloodline still residing in their ancestral estate…and they are all proud of their ancient unbroken heritage….A heritage that goes way back to their ancestors of the ‘Dreaming’.Alex Vesper

William Charles, Alexander Vesper and Herbert Charles unveil a memorial plague to their Githabul ‘Grandfather’ Doc Williams at the ‘Bokal-Ynee’communtiy Hall, Muli Muli Aboriginal Reserve Woodenbong in 1972

There are many unsung Hero’s within the Ngarakbal/Githabal community…Three of them were Mr Alec Vesper along with Euston Williams and his wife Charlotte and they were instrumental in the civil rights campaigns of the 1950’s…They obtained the correct permission [through tribal protocol]of their ‘Boss’ Elders to speak their Bootheram Lore in order to overthrow the crowns pre-1967 classification of Aboriginal people as Flora and Fauna…The crown laws of those times required them needing to prove they had a religion in order to prove that were Human…which is a totally outrageous concept, but that was the times…

rightsTo achieve this feat they spoke about their LORE – and the Bird Tribes descendants worked with the Three Brothers descendants…in unity….overcoming the ancient division between the Lore [and in respect for the ‘Eelmarni’ Marriage Rites that had occurred long ago] ….

This unity of TRUE Reconciliation of the Past divisions of the matrilineal lore descendants and patriarchal lore descendants was THE vital key that empowered the laws to change in 1967….and it effectively united the Aboriginal people, and gave great strength to the achievement of Land Rights and the creation of legislative recognition and protection of Sacred Sites in the 1970’s…and al appeared well, until the crown’s Native Title procedural processes divided them again in the 1990’s….

roland r head shot

Roland Robinson collected many Bootheram from the traditional descendants during the 1950’s…He always published them verbatim – unchanged just as their Lore decrees ….One story he collected was from Mr. Alex Vesper about The Three Brothers… In it Mr Vesper is telling the Ngarakbal/Githabal Bootheram of The Three Brothers who were the first people to find the land of the Bird Tribes, and they came in a Sailing Ship…….This story has been handed down by Aboriginal people through their generations.  This story can-not be altered – that is the Lore….

…”I am sixty-seven years of age.  I heard this story from my Grandfather who was a full-blood of the Ngarartbul tribe near Murwillumbah.  On my Grandmothers side the tribe was Gullibul, from Casino and Woodenbong.  I heard this story also from many old Aboriginals who came from other tribes…”…

…”The first finding of this unknown land, Australia, was made by Three Brothers, who came from the central part of the world. They were compelled to explore for land on the southerly part of the world because they were forced out of the centre part of the world because of revolutions and warfare of those nations of the central part…”.

“They came in a sailing ship. As they made direct for the south, coming across different islands and seeing the people in those islands, they kept in the sea all the time until they came to Australia, to the eastern part of the continent”.

“There first coming into this land was as Yamba Head on the Clarence River. They anchored just off the mouth of the Clarence.  This was the first landing of men in this ‘empty’ continent. They camped, taking out of their ‘empty’ ship all their camping belongings, such as a steel axe and many other things of the civilised race in the central part of the world…”.

“After they had rested from the voyage, through the night a storm started to rise from the west.  The force of wind broke the anchor and deprived them of the ship, which was driven out to sea and never seen again….”…….extract Mr Alex Vesper -Three Brothers – Roland Robinson

The Bootheram goes on to describe how the Three Brothers and their families were forced to remain in Australia….They have children and migrate North, South and West……

Other Elders of the moiety provided further information of this Bootheram of  how when the three brothers fled the war and arrived with their families the earth had been covered in a great flood…the ancestral Bird Tribe ‘Mother clans’ had retreated to higher grounds….’Nimbinje’ saw them coming and ‘sang’ up the wind….and of the subsequent death of the Northern Brother in an epic war that took place at NIMBIN Rocks ….but that’s another Bootheram for another time….

rightsThe Lore was told by Mr. Vesper to overcome the crowns Non-Human classification of all Aboriginal people…..Traditionally the Bird Tribes had been ‘classified’ as not being human by the Paigal [Men]…A lot of epic battles had occurred in respect to the arrival of the Paigal that goes way back in Lore and these events, just like the arrivals of all the peoples who followed after the Three Brothers, are still told within the Ngarakbal and Githabal community…

The relatively contemporary Bootheram of the Three Brothers arrival in the land of the Bird Tribes appears to match the geo-anthropological data post “Long Summer Holocene epoch’ in the Anthropocene [age of humanity] which heralded the collapse of Northern Hemisphere civilisation due to the shift in earth’s orbit forcing human migration as sea levels rose….and  …Current mtDNA studies verify the migration pattern as not having come ‘Out of Africa’, but of actually originating in Australia…..

IMG_195253334027910…..“Mitochondrial DNA puts the origin of Homo sapiens much further back and indicates that the Australian Aboriginals arose over 400,000 years ago from two distinct lineages, far earlier than any other racial type.”…..….and further, that…“The Aboriginal racial group has a much higher rate of mutations than any other racial group, which suggests that the Aboriginals split off from the common ancestor about 400,000 years ago. By the same theory, the Mongoloid originated about 100,000 years ago, and the Negroid and Caucasians about 40,000 years ago.”….Professor  Cann – Dept of Cell and Molecular Biology – University of Hawaiʻi, Mānoa

Scientists are now beginning to look more closely at the vast repository of oral Aboriginal mythology across the continent and have discovered that what had once been perceived as primitive myth is actually important knowledge correlating with and predating much of the northern hemispheres accepted academic disciplines;…..The ‘accepted’ migratory patterns of ancient peoples into the continent 40,000 years ago appears to be the patrilineal line [escaping an ancient war in the centre of the earth?] whilst a matrilineal line was established sometime in the 350,000 years of prior occupation as the Bird Tribes – and continues, in conjunction with the Patrilineal …

Academics are also realising that the same historical tales of epic Dreamtime battles between the ancestral matrilineal lines and migrating patriarchal lines were occurring all over the Australian continent in the same time [epoch] period – arriving in waves, all fleeing from an epic war in the central world of long ago….…and because of the requirement of Bootheram Lore to NEVER be changed, this magnificent LIVING library contains the most accurate portrayal of the REAL and un-sanitized history of Australia….and potentially, the planet…..

Arrivals in the Land of the Bird Tribes…Part 1

Current Anthropological study of Aboriginal Mythology alongside of Genetic Science is allowing us to move out of the ‘flat earth’ theories of human evolution and propel us into the conscious understanding of the big picture of our true origins..…The ancient Mother Clans of the Bird Tribes of Australia

IMG_195253334027910

Lots of people from lots of places have come to the ancestral estate of the Ngarakbal and Githabal people over many thousands and thousands of years…Lots of different people from lots of different lands…..They are either refugees migrating to safer locations following cataclysmic earth events, or, they have come to trade resources, etc….some even stayed and, in time, became part of the Bird Tribes….

Bootheram is the Ngarakbal and Githabal word for the “Dreaming – Time before Time”…The oldest Bootheram are sacred stories of creation and they have corresponding ‘Djurebil’, which is the Ngarakbal/Githabal word for Sacred Sites within their ancestral landscape.

….”Sacred Sites are the locations where Spirit ancestors either burst forth into the landscape in the Dreamtime, or withdrew from it to a state of eternal vigilance….These sacred sites are strong because they have been sanctified energetically by the spirit ancestors.  As well as providing Earth energy to all living species they are also the location of spirit children and the importance of these sites is reaffirmed by ceremonial and ritual activities at these sacred places…..”…Voit & Drury; Wisdom from the Earth; p 73

Bootheram cycles and there are divisions of these cycles [epochs or ages]…. And, there are areas of ‘light and dark’ within the landscape features…and Ngarakbal/Githabal Lore protocols have specific  no-go zones depending on the divisions [gender, level of initiation, totem, protocol, skin descent, access rights, etc.]

Some of the ‘djurebil’ [sacred sites] have multiple Bootheram attached to them…they might be an ancestral creation place, but at the same time they might be the location of an historical event, like epic battles, encounters,  or arrivals of peoples from other lands –  and, just as creation sites ‘travel’ through the landscape, sometimes historical sites do too – like links in a chain of events…

For the Ngarakbal and Githabal, an historical Bootheram site marks the divisions of the epoch separation [cycles] between ancient matrilineal bloodlines [Feathered Serpent Traditions, or Bird Tribes – “who have always been here”] and the more contemporary patrilineal bloodlines [Three Brothers – “who arrived here”]….

Now, this challenges a lot of contemporary academic ideologies about who the original ‘people’ are…but rapid advances in Genetic Science has revealed that two distinct lines converge in Australia through MtDNA analysis ….This sheds new light on historical perceptions and we have to readdress the ‘academic oversight’s’ muddling ancient Bootheram and historical Bootheram together, which has caused masses of discord within the community…… divide and conquer devices the crown have used this discord in a very effective ‘divide and conquer’ strategy…This strategy has been instrumental in causing division within the people – most recently in regards Native Title claims against the crown…..It has also corrupted the original meaning within the ancestral Bootheram [which must NEVER change] and in the past 20 years [since Land Rights and Native Title] lots of skewered versions of the Three Brother story have been created…and most of those have been funded by the crown.

What the academics don’t include was the prior visitations and arrivals of people into Australia BEFORE 1770 – Pre-crown…also, the Native Title academics choose to omit the divisions of the matrilineal and patriarchal descent lore’s that govern the djurebil [sacred sites] and their respective access/custodianship rights, etc. for the djurebil sites in accordance with ancient traditional lore and custom…Completely ignoring the important Lore rites and the events of the division [cycles] within the Lore ….and this too has been an effective divide and conquer tactic.

So, let’s briefly look at some of the information that the crowns academics have ‘overlooked’….I’ll start with some maps [from the UK’s own Library] that show the prior arrivals PRE-CROWN……and work backwards from there….

New Holand map -pre BritishBefore the Crown, there was the Dutch – and here is the 1710 Cartographers depiction of New Holland, which is what they called the continent….

And before the Dutch was the Portuguese and their maps are dated 1536 and 1542 respectively….and then their maps got stolen by the French…

Desliens 1541 map east coast Aust

….”In the Lusitano-French maps of the world which originated in the year 1542 with Dieppe [above] cosmographers, such as Pierre Desceliers and his school, there is a continental configuration which of late has greatly exercised the historians of maritime discovery….That region, called then Jave-la-Grande.  No historian, no documents of the 16th century, mention the existence of such an Austral continent.  We also see it disappear from subsequent maps, until long afterwards,  when the region looms up again,  but this time as an alleged discovery accomplished by Dutch Navigators…That continental land, nevertheless, so far from being imaginary or an invention of cartographers was nothing else thatn Australia,  now justly considered by competent judges as having been discovered,  visited and named by unknown Portuguese mariners – whose maps furnished the cartographical data used in the Dieppe charts 60 or 70 years before the Dutch first sighted the shores of the extensive country…”…Henry Harrisse

Dauphin map - 1536……..”The providence of the Dauphin Map 1536 [above], too, is distinguished.  We know it was ordered by King Francis I of France, as a gift to his son Dauphin, later Henry II.  How it came to England we do not know,  but when we hear of it next it is owned by Edward Harley, Earl of Oxford, one of the principal Lords of the Admiralty in the early 18th Century.  On Harleys death in 1724 it was stolen by one of his servants,  and being stolen goods was hidden for the next few decades.  Dr Solander came to hear of it: and it was acquired by Sir Joseph Banks”…KG McIntyre

And that is how the English got to Australia….

..”I have a manuscript in my possession, belonging to Sir Joseph Banks…the very curious manuscript here mentioned is painted on parchment with the Dauphin Arms; it contains much lost knowledge;  Kerguelen’s Land seems plainly denoted;  the east coast of New Holland, as we name it, is expressed”…. Dalrymple- pamphlet on the Chagos Islands [McIntyre :344 ]

But before the Europeans arrived there had been many other visitors from the Northern Hemisphere…..more than 3,500 years BEFORE Cook and all the others the EGYPTIANS came to the Ngarakbal/Githabal lands….

…Near….“Brunswick Heads stands a mound which appears not to belong……..  Fred Fordham was a teacher at the Brunswick Heads Primary school and had heard the local tales that a grand ceremonial ground existed in the area where aborigines gathered from far and wide……Fred sent his notes and drawings and the answers were returned….. most of this correspondence and original work still exists in the valley…The answers were there.  The twisting path was a snake, a kangaroo and an emu were represented, the sun was present, plus a host of others ceremonial symbols.  There was only one thing wrong, which didn’t seem to worry Fred.   The entire layout, names and all were ancient Egyptology – the sun god Ra and many others appeared.  Fred could [still] get no backing and the second world war made people think of other things… – extract Oakes collection AIATSIS ; http:www.ancientwisdomoftheancestors.com – Sonya Van Gelder

Yes, there have been lots of visitors and migrations into the Australian Continent over thousands of years….but it goes back further …way, way back to when the first migrations arrived in the land of the Bird Tribes….which begins after an ancient war took place in the centre of the world….

The Bootheram also records the stories about the ancient war and the Bird Tribes traveling up to fight in those wars…But,  there were also arrivals to the land of the bird Tribes who were fleeing from that war…ancient refugees…They are known in the historical Lore of the Ngarakbal/Githabl as The Three Brothers, and they arrived into the ancient landscape of the Bird Tribes on the East Coast  because of this war……and there are records of these arrivals [and ensuring epic battles] occurring in many other ancestral Oral Lore histories in this continent…

At this point I should [clearly] point out that the arrival of the Three Brothers in the land of the Bird Tribes was dealt with by the Aboriginal people in their own PRE-CROWN version of Reconciliation way back – through a Marriage rite, known as the ‘Eelemarni’ –  and discord and division only reared up again as a result of Native Title [divide and conquer issue] incited by the crown….. But, in order to understand the division cycles within the ancestral and historical, we need to look at the historical Bootheram and understand it as Historical and unrelated to Creation Bootheram…and to do that, we have to look at Lore and geology….

The Land itself is the creation of the Spirit Ancestors – the Fairy Emu Dreaming [Bootheram] of Nguthungulli, the creation ancestor who ‘sings’ the landscape into being as he walks westward – He has Four Daughters and One Son, who become the Bird Tribes – and they were ‘made here, they didn’t arrive here –  this is Bird Tribe Lore – Alcheringa [ ancient epoch]……….Then, much later in time, historical events unfold…Now it is the landscape that becomes the enduring ‘keeper’ of both creation and historical events that have occurred at various locations on the land which the spirit ancestor created –  thus, corresponding ‘djurebil’  [sacred sites] are scattered within the landscape- layer upon layer – and this is why one site might have many Bootheram attached to it…..

Bootheram are taught to the whole of the community under the careful guidance of the Elders who are consulted in regards to the correct meanings, rituals and responsibilities to those sacred places….The whole community learns the same Bootheram, but, the Higher knowledge may only be spoken of by the fully initiated Senior [Boss] Elders whose have obtained the full knowledge of the meaning, language, song, dance sequences and ritual associated with the site…..the Higher Lore is kept ‘closed’ as it contains elements considered too sacred for the uninitiated or of the wrong ‘Skin’ to know prior to undergoing appropriate initiation into the custodial Lore of a specific site….In Githabal and Ngarakbal Lore no-one is allowed to narrate or perform until correct consultation with the Senior Initiated [Boss] Elders is obtained in the correct ritual manner – this traditionally takes days or weeks because the ancestral lore has a defined sequence of protocols that must be strictly followed…….This ensures that the ancient lore is respected and remains intact for all time.

”Amongst the different regional groups, the sacred knowledge of myth, song, ritual and ceremony – linked with sacred sites – is passed orally from generation to generation.  This knowledge also relates to the meaning of ‘country’, and has a practical function – it helps to differentiate groups of people and it also defines tribal rights to land and resources.  Such knowledge is never the sole possession of an individual but is held by a group of people who have been initiated into custodianship of that land and therefore have a right to the sacred information that is associated with it….”…Voit & Drury – Wisdom of the Earth

One Historical Sacred Site in the Ngarakbal/Githabal lands is bordering the Widjabil [Bundjalung proper] ancestral estate and records the scene of an epic battle between the Ancestral Mother Clans and one of the ‘Three Brothers’ who came to the Bird Tribe lands long, long ago…This epic battle took place at what is now known as Nimbin Rocks… The correct Ngarakbal word is ‘Nimbinje’…but, Nimbin was the closest Europeans could get to pronouncing it  – ….another sacred site [with multiple Bootheram associations] that links to the historical Bootheram is Mt Burrell/Blue Knob which to the Ngarakbal and Githabal is known as ‘Biorgini’ and it is the home of the ‘Wind Spirit’

‘Nimbinje’ means ‘Hairy Man’ in the Ngarakbal/Githabal language…and this Nimbinje, from Biorgini was from the ancestral Bird Tribe…..and could commanded the Wind with sacred ‘songs’ and rituals….

Three Brothers [Historical] Bootheram has been recorded and published many times.  The earliest was recorded in 1892….It is known as ‘The Legend of the Three Brothers’.

The following excerpt from a publication by Rev. Livingstone in 1892 more or less summaries the legend of the Three Brothers arrival in the land of the Mother Clans

….“Long ago Beerung,  with his two brothers Mommon and Yaburong came to this land.  They came with their wives and children in a great canoe, from an island across the sea.  As they came near shore a woman on the land made a song that raised a storm which broke the canoe in pieces….this is how the paigal [men] came to this land…”…

And this arrival happened after a great war in the centre of the earth…..but that’s another Bootheram…

I will post the Ngarakbal/Githabal Elders narration of the Three Brothers arrival in Part Two of Ancient arrivals to the Land of the Bird Tribes… So, If you would like to receive automatic notification of future posts to this site then subscribe to my newsletter… And for more info on the Egyptians visiting the East Coast of the continent check out Sonya Van Gelders website- Ancient Wisdom of the Ancestors at http:www.ancientwisdomoftheancestors.com …it’s located in the links …Hoo Roo

The Metaphor of the Ice-Ages in Ancient Aboriginal Lore

Australian Bird Tribe Lore is older than anything you will read in any library on this planet…..it comes from the “time before time”….If you know how to understand the levels of the metaphoric information you start to realise that it covers just about every type of scientific discipline known to modern man, and then some…..

glacier 2

Modern Science is only just starting to appreciate how eloquently the ancient oral Bootheram bears testimony to the endurance of the Bird Tribes and their traditions to survive [thrive] throughout time; and recognise it as a priceless global heritage which has long been overlooked and undervalued

We have been conditioned to think that the Australian Indigenous ‘Dreamtime’ stories, which the Ngarakbal and Githabal call Bootheram, are just nice little parables about people, animals and the like [and, actually some Bootheram are just that too]….BUT; within some of the Oral Traditional Lore is profound ancient truth recording the geological, biological, geomagnetic climate events that the ‘Bird Tribe’ ancestors witnessed ‘way, way back in the time before time’…..and these truths are portrayed in Metaphor.

The ancient oral records must NEVER be changed – the penalty; Death…..Now, this doesn’t necessarily mean death by homicide….for this too is a metaphor…..It meant death by ignorance….Perishing, or ‘extinguishment’, as a result of not faithfully maintaining and following the Traditional Customary Lore…..and there is good reason for that…..

volcano 1The ancient cultural knowledge explains everything you need to know about how to survive….It teaches how to survive when the earth is bountiful and stable – ie, cultural knowledge [and totemic responsibilities] for species increase, firestick farming, boundaries, access rights, trade etc…BUT, it also teaches how to survive when the earth is NOT bountiful or stable  – ie; climate change, volcanism, meteorite impacts, etc [and totemic knowledge of what to watch for celestially]….and, it even has mechanisms of how to survive all the associated problems of triggered Ice Ages; Sea-level’s rising and falling, genetic isolation , maintaining and protecting water and food resources, etc….

This important knowledge is taught and celebrated through ceremonial song, dance, stories and traditional tribal design motif’s….that’s the traditional cultural way….In a perfect world it would be revered and respected to remain unchanged as a LIVING LIBRARY…..and in ancient times it was…..and for very good reason….

As we all know, the Earth has cycles…Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter…and these are linked to celestial cycles – orbits, etc….Bootheram recognises and records this too…….Modern science is only just beginning to unravel the mysteries of our Earth and it’s place in the cosmos and the cycles within the solar system and beyond….and Bootheram records this also…Cycles are about Change…..The ‘old people’ accepted change as an inevitable part of nature….they knew about cycles….and they consciously choose to live in harmony with these cycles…..and there is a very good reason for this..

…”Our Bootheram is like white man’s science…and in many ways it’s better than it….The scientists have only just started figuring out what our old people always knew….about the stars, and the cycles and the water and the animals and the people…how it all works together…..they didn’t listen…what the old people were telling them about back then…. they couldn’t understand then and they’re still catching up” ……….Marlene Boyd

earths magnetic fieldOne of Earths cycles as it journeys through the universe affects the geo-magnetic field of our planet….Geomagnetism is what holds our Earths Polar Axis steady – Magnetic ‘Mother Sun’ on one side and ‘Father Moon’ on the other dance around us, keeping our seasonal cycles even as we journey through the greater universe…..this present cycle of ‘steady seasons’ gave the northern hemisphere tribes time to develop agriculture and centralised habitation over the last 10 – 15, 000 years……which is quiet the polar opposite of the conscious seasonal/nomadic existence of the Australian tribal peoples….for a very good reason

The indigenous ‘nomadic’ lifestyle has historically been portrayed as evidence of the Australia moieties being prehistoric and primitive……The northern hemispheres ‘Roman’ concept of defining a ‘primitive’ peoples was there being no evidence of agriculture amongst the Aboriginal peoples [which isn’t correct either – they do…but we’ll save that for another time]…..Anyway, the action of tilling the soil became the legal ‘Act’ which was used to validate the crowns occupation and tenure of ‘Terra Nullius’ – Captain Cook sailed into Sydney, turned a sod of dirt over on Possession Island – as an act of agriculture – and then planted a flag and claimed Australia for the crown….yes, that’s all it took – according to the crown’s laws and customs…..and ignoring the sovereignty of the Aboriginal peoples Lore…

So…… let’s get back to why there is a very good reason for the [very] conscious choice of the moieties upholding the ancestral Traditional Lore Customs ways and not relying on European agricultural cropping/farming concepts…preferring to live in harmony with all species [‘Skins’] instead of tilling the soil and using mono-culture farming practices …..

As a very ancient isolated island mass – removed from the Northern Hemisphere Cultures and being the last continent to be invaded [only 240+ years ago ]  the ancestral Lore has survived, and thankfully so, because the ‘old people’  knew about Earth Cycles……Earth’s cycles linked to even greater celestial cycles….….and how these greater cycles affect earths [and it’s planetary neighbours] geomagnetism and cause climate change events cyclically….which is very important knowledge…..It’s known as Star Lore ..and it’s intrinsic to Survival.

IMG_335817943612431

Modern Science has been busy leaning about Earths geomagnetism and been able to verify that our planets geomagnetic strength drops and reverses approx. every 250,000 years…these figures have been obtained from drill samples that show 160 million years of cyclic climatic data about the Earth……The reversal events match increased volcanism, meteorite impacts and sea levels cycles since the planet began…….However, there is one distinct exception to the 250,000 year cycle and it’s got the science fraternity very worried……Data is showing that our planet has not had a geomagnetic reversal for the last 750,000 years – and so it’s LONG overdue……Now; they are increasingly worried because their data is showing that during the past decade our poles have migrated 1500km off the ‘normal’ axis… [North and South Pole respectively]……and are continuing to migrate….lots of volcanic activity is occurring – like Yellowstone and India, etc…and lots of wild weather [natural disasters] have been occurring globally during the same 10 year period……

Our planets weakening geomagnetic field is what Scientists believe atmosphereallowed our atmosphere to escape into space in past ‘extinction’ events…Magnetics dropped, oxygen escaped, and masses of species died of asphyxiation…. Currently the atmospheric data is showing that there is a large hole over Brazil…Scientists are monitoring closely…..so are Sovereign Tribal Nations…

The Scientists have also found that [contrary to public belief] the earth does not flip over or roll around in space when the geomagnetic field reverses [making the new north pole Hawaii, or where-ever] and nor does the drop in gravitational force mean that things float off the surface of the earth….No, that doesn’t’ happen at all…..the magnetism just stops….our atmosphere leaks into space….gravitational fields neutralise, and then the magnetic field reverses; and that makes compasses [which currently always point North]  point South instead…it happens fast – according to the data…..As you’d expect it also causes a lot of climatic chaos in the process…escaping atmospheric oxygen, increase in volcanism, meteorite impacts and the like…Bootheram records the same information and also ‘sings’ about the continental drift changing direction and the planet reversing its spin…..in metaphor..

satelites esa trioPresently, because Earth’s geomagnetic field is failing [it’s already weakened by 10% ] the European Space Authority has launched a trio of satellites to learn as much as they can about geomagnetic reversals, as quickly as possible…….they are passing wave frequencies through the planet to measure Earths magnetic field

I must point out that my intention is not intended to scare anyone in regards geomagnetic polar reversal, or profess to be a scientific expert – I’m not….I’m explaining why Bird Tribe Bootheram is so important and must NEVER be changed…..and for your convenience I have provided a whole heap of links about geomagnetic polar reversal at the end of this post so you can check out what the scientists are finding for yourself…..now, back to the Bootheram……

7 sisters 3Earth events [caused by celestial cycles] like Geomagnetic reversals are embedded in the Bootheram metaphoric Lore; and align with the Seven Sisters ‘Skin Lore’- The Ngarakbal and Githabal call the ‘Seven Sisters’ [Pleiades] Waringeh or Waringge:n and they bring the Cold [ie; Ice Ages]…Warick is known as ‘Waring Waring’ and is a ‘djurebil’ [sacred site] for the Ngarakwal/Githabal Bird Tribes…… Seven Sisters traditions are held in many global tribal cultures…..Most of them, including the Roman’s, refer to them as also being BIRDS….but we won’t digress into that just yet as this post is about the Metaphor of Ice Ages in the Ngarakbal and Githabal Bird Tribe Bootheram….the Ngarakbal Githabal are descendants of the Carpet-snake Clans from the Feathered Serpent Traditions…the most ancient lore of the continent

glacier 5Ok, so……..One such Bootheram of the Githabal and Ngarakbal peoples is Dirrangun at Tooloom, and it tells of the END of an Ice Age….the characters who are portrayed within this are given the physical values of being human’s or dogs or trees, etc…it reads like a nice little story about a witch who steals water….but in reality these characters are metaphors for glaciers, planets, mountains and also chronological markers of climatic events……Traditional Bootheram have accompanying songs, dances and ceremonies so that the entire community can keep the knowledge of these events, remember to live in harmony with all species [‘Skins’] – and thus survive together – Cause wouldn’t the world be a sad place without all the colour and biodiversity of the ‘Skins’……Everything is connected and deserves protection and respect….simple…

So that’s why Traditional Bootheram Lore is NEVER allowed to be changed and should never EVER be overlooked or undervalued… …It should be RESPECTED and REVERED always ….Historically, the survival of Humanity depends on it….

Enjoy reading this beautiful Bootheram about Tooloom Falls in Githabal country…..and have a go at decoding the metaphors..

Dirrangun at Tooloom – by Mr Euston Williams– Githabal –  it was recorded in the 1950’s…as part of the civil rights movement

Euston Williams

Some people say that Dirrangun is a witch, that she’s mean and cunning and brings you all the mischief in the world.  Others say that she’s friendly.  But she’s a very old woman and she has long hair down to her knees.

Dirrangun had two married daughters and a son-in-law.  This son-in-law was a buloogan, a well-built, handsome man.  The daughters of the Dirrangun were his two wives.

As far as I can make out from the old people, these two daughters quarrelled with their mother and the buloogan took the quarrel up and sided with his two wives. They starved the old woman; they didn’t pass her anything to have a feed.

Dirrangun’s camp was under a big fig-tree, here at this waterfall which is the source of the Clarence River. There was a basin here, a hollow in the rock, which contained the water.  Tooloom now is the white man’s name for this waterfall.  Tooloom is the nearest they could get to saying Dooloomi.

While the son-in-law and his two wives were out hunting and gathering food, Dirrangun drained the water out of the pool with a bark coolamon.  Some people say that she put the fire out, too, so that there was no fire in the world.

When the buloogan and his two wives came home in the evening there was no water.  The wives were running about all over the place looking for water.  But there was no water.  Dirrangun had put leaves and bark over the empty basin hole in the rock so that the place was hidden.  For two or three days the buloogan and his wives could not get a drink.

Dirrangun was pretending to cry for them.  Some people say Dirrangun was sitting on this coolamon of water in her camp, hiding it.  These people say that when the buloogan found this out, he got angry and cried, “well, your not going to have all the water! I’ll let it out!” He thrust his spear into that coolamon, biggi  we call it, and let it out.

Others say that when Dirrangun, the buloogan and his two wives went to sleep,  the buloogan’s  two dogs,  who were thirsty found the water which Dirrangun had hidden in the coolamon.  You see those two mountains? They were called  Dillalea and Kalloo-Guthun.  They are named after those two dogs.

In the night those two dogs returned to the camp of the buloogan and stood over him.  And the water dripped from their mouths.  When the buloogan  felt this he woke up.  He followed the two dogs back to where Dirrangun was asleep with the hidden water.

rain on a glacier 2When the buloogan  saw where the water was hidden, he was angry.  He made a big rain, a big down-pour rain.  The hollow rock basin began to fill.  The water rose and rose and backed up where this creek is now.

Some say that when the water began to rise Dirrangun climbed into the fig-tree and made a platform in the boughs.  But the water rose and swept her and the fig-tree away and left this hollow beneath these cliffs where the waterfall is now.

Morteon bay fig 2 (2)Dirrangun was holding on to the fig-tree as she was swept away.  She was swept over the second fall, which we call Ngalumbeh.  At the bottom of this fall she was whirled round and round, still holding on to the fig-tree, in a whirlpool for half a day.

The water was getting stronger and stronger.  The buloogan had cursed the water to make it unmanageable.  It took her and the fig-tree away down the Clarence River.  From time to time Dirrangun would sit in the torrent with her legs wide apart trying to block the water, but each time the flood would bear her away.

Where the South River comes into this river, Dirrangun sat with her legs outspread.  The water rose and went up and made the South River.  There she sat until the flood rose and swept her and the fig-tree on again.

fig on the riverBelow Grafton on the river there is a fig-tree growing.  Many old men would see that fig-tree and say, “Oh look! Dooloomi borrgun!”. This means, “that fig-tree belongs to Tooloom!”.  Those old men would say, “Dirrangun. She’s away down there, but she belongs up there at Tooloom.”And I am told that Dirrangun is still in that fig-tree below Grafton.

We ALL come from the Bird Tribes

“We are the Bird Tribes…We did not ‘come’ here, we were always here…we were ‘made ’here”. …Marlene Boyd    IMG_1066642208575158

Women are rarely mentioned in the Anthropological literature as owners of country in their own right or as decision making individuals; they appear as wives and mothers, their relationship to the Bootheram always mediated through another….but this is not always Traditional Lore way…

Millie Boyd was an exception to European patriarchal thinking, and so was her Mother Charlotte Williams [nee. Brown] because they maintained their ancestral lore traditions after invasion and in spite of European Authorities

I was very blessed to have known and worked with the late Mrs. Marlene Boyd….Charlotte Williams was her Grandmother…..Marlene was an amazing being. She loved her country – Ngarakbal country, the beautiful Tweed Caldera…..She told me about her Grandmother’s Bootheram, the Fairy Emu Dreaming….It’s a ‘traveling’ Bootheram – the transcontinental songline –  which commences in the Ngarakbal ancestral estate – first place to feel the dawn light of Mother Sun…..It tells the ‘Dreaming Lore’ of one of the Ngarakbal and Githabals supreme creation ancestor ‘Nguthungalli’ who walks towards the west creating the geological features of the landscape as he travels…..He ‘sings’ everything into existence…..

IMG_990054782226358

…”….A big rock stands in the sea six miles from Byron Bay

A man named Nguthungulli made that rock. Nguthungulli is our Father. He’s the Father of the whole world. He’s the man we’ve got to be afraid of. No matter what we do wrong, or where we do it, He’ll know. And no man has seen Him…”……Extract form the Fairy Emu Dreaming by Charlotte Williams [Brown]

Marlene Boyd spent a lot of time insisting to me that her people were always ‘here’……..”We did not come here, we were always here…We were made in the west….We are the bird tribes” she would state emphatically……and then she would ‘sing’….

The Boyd and Williams’s families and their relations are survivors of the crown invasion – post colonisation of Terrra Nullius….Australia – Ancient Island of the Bird Tribes which Marlene said was the origin of all the tribes upon the planet….

The whole Ngarakbal and Githabal community is extremely proud of who they are and what they represent….and deservedly so, for the Ngarakbal and Githabal descendants have always been involved at the ‘coalface’ of indigenous political, environmental and, indeed, scientific developments heaped upon then by government and the crown…..

But their association to this land is much, much older than when Capt. Cook sailed past Cape Byron and first sketched ‘Wollumbin’ and named it Mt Warning for the Crown to ‘claim’ Cooks Sketch Mt Warning 1770

on Tuesday the 15th of May 1770…..For their association goes way, back……into the Dreaming, which they call Bootheram…..way, way, way, back…..

.”The Bootheram is one continuous moment STRETCHED – across time and space”, Marlene told me…..”It’s made in the mountains. It’s made in the water….They can take our land, but they will never take our Bootheram”, she would say……She was a proudly Traditional Lore Woman from a very long line of the same, and even though we would be sitting in my beach shack [which had become the Ngarakbal/Nganduwal Aboriginal ‘office’], when she spoke her Lore, she meant business, and  the spirit of her ancestors came through her loud and clear……

Marlene was very ‘strong’ about who she was and who the Ngarakbal and Githabal are, and of their place within the ancestral tribes of this ancient continent, of which she insisted had always been ‘here’….…

“We are the Bird Tribes….We did not ‘come’ here, we were always here….We were ‘made’ here….”…when she said this she wasn’t just refereeing to Aboriginal Australians, no, she meant the global peoples – from “the time before time – way, way, way, back”….and she wasn’t the only one saying this either….

“They say we have been here 60,000 years. But it is much longer. We have been here since the time before time began … All other peoples of the world come from us.” ……Aboriginal Elder: Page 122 – “Voices of the First Day”

Marlene’s ancestors had been extensively studied by the scientific academics since colonial times and a great raft of research has been collated specifically about these families….one of those academic studies shows the blood sampling that was taken of her grandparents and great grandparents by the government of the early 1900’s….

Now, the Ngarakbal ancestral women’s ‘Skin Lore’ is Biological Genetics in Native Science….the basis of ‘Skin Lore’ determines ‘right way’ marriages, but is by no means limited to just that…like all Lore it has multi dimension facets and layers of meaning……It’s important to remember that an isolated island nation, like Australia, needed to be mindful of avoiding inter-relation marriages that could weaken the genetic strength and health of its people….and so the ‘Skin Lores’ govern that strictly…..it’s matrilineal descent recorded in totem of bloodline descent – through Grandmothers….much like MitochondrialDNA [MtDNA]…

Marlene was adamant that contemporary science was wrong….that, “the Aboriginal people didn’t walk out of Africa” and that it was actually the other way around…She insisted that the ‘Skin Lore’ would show that…..So, she got me to research the science and then we started lobbying government to use MtDNA in Native Title…The by-product of all this Science v’s ‘Skin lore’ was that she showed me, that what she was insisting appeared to be quiet valid….

The research found that in the last 20 years major advances had been made in the study of blood samples, and, interestingly, they directly challenge any supposed African link to Australia’s ancestral people, and dramatically extend the purported 60,000 years of occupation by ancestral tribes to a FAR, FAR GREATER timescale…this had occurred because of advances in cellular and molecular biology – genetics and their origins….To date, even the scientists who first established the “Out of Africa” theory have readdressed their own work and now concede that Australia appears to be the birthplace of ALL modern human beings….

Most notable of these scientists is Rebecca L. Cann, who is currently Professor in the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa…. Cann was the geneticist who made a scientific breakthrough on mitochondrial DNA variation and evolution in humans, popularly called ‘Mitochondrial Eve’….. Her initial discovery and theory was that all living humans are genetically descended from a single African mother who lived <200,000 years ago….this became the foundation of the Out of Africa theory, which she assisted in developing whilst  a doctoral student under the supervision of Dr. Alan Wilson, the then Professor of Biochemistry at the University of California, Berkeley……  Wilson was a pioneer in the use of molecular approaches to understanding evolutionary change and reconstruct phylogenies, and a revolutionary contributor to the study of human evolution…..They had checked all the facts and they were sure that they were right…but they weren’t……

After graduating from Berkeley, Cann continued her mtDNA research.  She has since stated that…..“Mitochondrial DNA puts the origin of Homo sapiens much further back and indicates that the Australian Aboriginals arose over 400,000 years ago from two distinct lineages, far earlier than any other racial type.”…..….and further, that……….“The Aboriginal racial group has a much higher rate of mutations than any other racial group, which suggests that the Aboriginals split off from the common ancestor about 400,000 years ago. By the same theory, the Mongoloid originated about 100,000 years ago, and the Negroid and Caucasians about 40,000 years ago.”….
And Professor Cann was not alone in these findings either…Her ‘new’ research led Wilson to visit Australia in 1985 and he too has had to reformulate his previous theory of “Out of Africa”…more and more eminent scientist then added to the ‘picture’ of our global human origins

Roy Simmons of the Commonwealth Serum Laboratory states, “Australian data indicated that the Aborigines actually evolved earlier than the African Negroes. There was no blood evidence to indicate the African Negroes had any connection to the Australian Aborigines.”…..

Professor Lanarch of Sydney University concurred with Simmon’s insistence the Australian Aboriginals stand alone. “We therefore have no hesitation in omitting the Negritos as the ancestors of the Australian Aborigines.” ….

Cann and Simmons, along with a growing number of academics have now concluded that Aboriginal people are far more genetically diverse than any other population….according to Cann, 10 times more than Africans….

Added to the scientific findings was the voice of Keith Windshuttle, an Australian writer and historian [authored The Fabrication of Aboriginal History, etc]……Windshuttle stated that “fifty years of blood genetic research has failed to provide any clue to Aboriginal origins”…and elaborated with “May I state here and now that our extensive blood surveys conducted in Australia, Indonesia, Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia, produced no genetic evidence that the Negro even entered the Pacific.”

It seemed that everything Marlene was telling me from the Bootheram was the truth…”Forget everything they taught you Stella and begin again with the Lore”, she told me…it was blind leap of faith to begin with, but over time the Bootheram always turns up trumps……

One day I’d asked Marlene, why would the government academics collude to keep this amazing information so secretive?…..Was it because of maintaining land tenure?…..Was it to thwart Native Title recognition of Traditional Ownership pre-crown?… Could this whole ‘Out of Africa’ concept be part of a global government ideology to maintain tenure and control of the global sovereign lands…and could this be why they change the maps and the original geospatial linguistic attributions of the names on those maps?….Marlene smiled……”Now you’re getting it girl” she said……….

What a wise old woman….

THE MYTH OF THE MOUNTAIN – JULGUMBUN

Mount Lindesay is the most significant sacred site of the Githabal people…the Githabal are the marriage clan of the Ngarakbal…these two ancient volcano clans are located on the most eastern point of the Australian continent, where the first light of magnetic ‘Mother Sun’ rises from the ocean and awakens the whole land……

IMG_63454008159641

The Ngarakbal and Githabal Bootheram [Dreaming lore] is inextricably interlinked….Bootheram tells of the creation of the land and all the inhabitants of the land….Plants and animal, fish and birds, everything has a Bootheram – and all Bootheram is interlinked…..its Native Science held in oral format and celebrated and related through song, dance and ceremony…Ancient truths held in metaphoric lore….Contemporary scientist’s and physicists would find correlation in disciplines such as morphogenetic’s, crystallography, biology, geology, and hydrology, to name but a [mere] few….the Githabal and Ngarakbal Bootheram is totally beautiful stuff…..and why wouldn’t it be….for they have grown along with this landscape throughout time and space.

I want to share with you a creation Bootheram about Mount Lindesay that was related to Phinney MacPherson [who managed to ensure to name a substantial portion of the landscape after himself when he surveyed it for the crown]…..Anyway, the important person in this is the Githabal Elder who he recorded this Bootheram from…it was a Mr Euston Williams…..Mr Williams was the husband of Charlotte Brown, a Ngarakbal woman from the Tweed Caldera…..Charlotte sang the Ngarakbal ‘portion’ of the Fairy Emu Dreaming [transcontinental songline] about her ancestral country and it’s central significant/sacred Mountain – Wollumbin……

Now, Euston and Charlotte were instrumental in the Civil Rights campaigns of the 1950’s….during those times the crown did not recognise Aboriginal people as being human, and had crudely ‘classified’ them under the Flora and Fauna legislations of the day….back then, one of the prerequisites for legally being a human being was to have an identified religion….So, Euston and Charlotte, along with many other Senior Elders agreed to start speaking & singing about their ‘religion’…they spoke their truth…Bootheram- LORE…and many other Senior Elders from their respective ancestral countries joined them right across the country…..collectively they campaigned for more than a decade [it’s an awesome story]….In 1967 after mounting pressure from the Australia public  the crown rescinded the flora and fauna classification and human rights were granted……the collective force of a positive campaign to speak their ancient truth produced a positive outcome….morphic field resonance…..Bootheram

The Myth of the Mountain by Eustan Williams

….”Look at that mountain standing up, see how it goes straight up on it’s sides. No man can climb that mountain.  Look at it’s head, through the mist, covered with trees.  I worked as a chainman to Phinney MacPherson, the surveyor, right along this range and, when we come to Jalgumbun, he says to me, “Now Eustan, let me see them steps you say are cut out in this mountain”.  And I pointed out them steps. He stood there, writing in his notebook the story of the mountain that I told him………………That mountain Jalgumbun was once a tree”.Mt Lindsay pic

.”A man went after honey in that tree. He climbed up with the vine-rope round himself and round the tree. And as he climbed he cut footholds with his stone axe.  And his wives were waiting in the forest down below.

“Where are you?”, they called out.  And he called back, “I’m chopping out the honey”.  At last he called out, “”Here it is” and rolled the piece of wood with all the honey in it down to the butt and big roots of the tree.  They sat down in that camp and ate that honey and travelled then away along the range.

That night there was no moon. The women looked out into the night and whispered to each other “oh look what is that ‘something’ over there”….”oh its like a shadow, see, that ‘something’ over there is blocking out the stars”.

And in the morning when they woke they saw the mountain that was never there before. Jalgumbun, standing up against the sky.

Well there’s a tree called Jalgumbun that grows here in the ranges.  It has real soft skin.  The fellas from the mill at Urbenville come with their axes, tractors and their gear, and fell and lop them trees and drag them out from the ranges of their native home….”………

Beautiful stuff Bootheram….It has many layers….and the strength of these beautiful people to keep their traditional lore and custom aflame is an inspiration…..and their is so much more…..if you are interested subscribe to my newsletter….Hoo roo

Aboriginal Significance of Mount Warning/Wollumbin

The Ngarakbal and Githabal are the descendants of the ancient ‘Bird Tribes’ of Australia…..They call the dreamtime, ‘Bootheram’….In 1977 Howard Creamer an Anthropologist for Australian National Parks and Wildlife Services recorded many  of the significant cultural sites within the Ngarakbal Githabal lands as part of the governments Aboriginal Sites Survey…

king Brown -Woolumba

The Ngarakbal and Githabal have witnessed many arrivals into their homelands. Some came in peace, others in war… Many cultures from far away lands have come to this beautiful place over the thousands and thousands of generations just as they come today…and with each arrival, or conquest the Yoocum Yoocum have encompassed these event into their ancestral Bootheram [Dreaming Lore]  – oral traditions, songs and dances of the historical truths about the events that took place in their ancestral lands…because Bootheram is not only the story of the land and all its biological inhabitants, plants and animals, but also the story of the all the peoples who have ever come to this ancient Volcano….the Abode of the Rainbow Serpent.

The Ngarakbal and Githabal refer to themselves as keepers of the ‘Feathered Serpent Lore traditions’ – The Bird Tribes…Birds are the Feathered Serpents, the descendants of the Goanna [dinosaurs]…and the Ngarakbal and Githabal are the descendants of the Bird Tribes…thus,  the Ngarakbal and Githabal are the ancient ancestral moieties of this landscape….They did not come here, they were always here…There lore tells of how they were made here…This ‘knowing’ is held in their Bootheram lore [Dreaming]…..The birds gave them their Lore, their land, and their LANGUAGE….but more on that later

In the meantime, here is the Aboriginal and Anthropological Significance of Mt Warning/Wollumbin  – recorded by Howard Creamer for the Australian National Parks and Wildlife Service in 1997…..it’s an extract of the  transcript of the site registration but I have attached the original site registration…and the original audio file that Howard Creamer gave me…..

Aboriginal and Anthropological Significance of the Site Wollumbin recorded by Howard Creamer, Anthropologist for Australian National Parks and Wildlife Services.

The following information on Wollumbin was recorded by Mrs Milli Boyd [nee Williams] of Woodenbong…see below….She was born at Woodenbong around 1910 and comes from there but her mother and husband were from the Tweed Valley area and she has maintained links there all her life.  Woodenbong is in the traditional territory of the Gidabal people, while Wollumbin is in Nerackbal country. There are today very few people who identify as Nerackbal and the Tweed Valley is now perceived by most people as being within the area of the large Bunjalung tribal language group.  The following transcript of a tape recording made in December 1977 with Millie Boyd explains the significance of the site:

milli boyd [nee Williams]

See they’re three sisters those – there’s Wollumbin, Mebbini, Byorgini that Nimbin Mountain.  That‘s my mothers’s mother’s mountain.  That’s Byorgini and in the middle that’s Mebbini and Wollumbin in the front, like that, you can see it. That’s Mebbini, that story came from here, from Mt Brown, you know where all the birds got together and spoke their lingo and this big bird came up and frightened them. They was talking Gullyval, Muli, Gidabal.  Magpie flew somewhere else.  Parrot flew down there to Evans Head, that’s how thee came to be Bundjalung.  And the wounded parrot flew back right near Lismore out to Casino, you see a gully there,  they reckon the waters blood there, red, where he settled.  And Turkey flew back there, wounded.  That’s why Mt. Warning got that little bend in his neck.  That’s why that National Park,  they look after it very well.

Wollumbin,  that’s a wild turkey.  He flew from Mount Brown to Mount Warning and he stood right on the point and he was wounded on the head with a spear.  That’s why there’s a little point there on the top,  you take good notice today when we get down there.  Yeerin’s there,  that’s where the fairies come from.  He carried the gold there,  right on the point….[Milli sings the song Wollumbin]

Below is the actual Australian National Parks and Wildlife site registration of Wollumbin

Mt Warning Rego #2 of 2

and here is the original recording that Creamer made of Mrs Milli Boyd telling him the significance of Wollumbin and associated sites within the Ngarakbal and Githabal areas……”Biorgini”- Blue Knob, Mt Burrell – Wind Spirit….”Mebbini, Momoli” – Lofts Pinnacle -Eaglehawk….and “Wullumban” , Wollumbin – Turkey

This is just one of many audio files made by Howard Creamer that explain how the Birds gave the Ngarakbal Githabal their Language, Lore and Land…I will be uploading more in the future …so stay tuned or subscribe to my newsletter [its free] and you will automatically receive my posts in your email……..Hoo-Roo

Mapping the Bootheram – how the West was ‘won’ from the East

The Ngarakbal hold the first portion of one of the important Transcontinental Bootheram Lore’s [Dreaming]…as above so below, it is written in the stars for the Lore to travel on the land through the peoples songs, hence, Songline…… and each tribal cultural block hold their portion of the ‘song’ as It travels across the land….following the stars….ironically it was the same stars that the British followed to Australia

mt warning caldera - with Wollumbin

Lore must always be sung in sequence…..just as one cannot fully understand a play from only half way through the plot…neither can one understand the lore unless it commences at the beginning….

Land and language [dialect or linguistics] are linked…and the name of the clans who hold portions of the ‘song’ is the same name as their dialect…and as the song travels it changes dialect, passing through each ancestral clan Estate….

For the Ngarakbal their central sacred site, Mt Warning/Wollumbin has many names….it depends on the Bootheram that is being related as to which name is used

In historical Bootheram’s each timeframe, or epoch, has a Creator Being …a totem who embodies that time and place…When the Wollumbin volcano was part of the deep ocean it had the totem of the Tiger Shark – and a specific name for that creation ancestor….And as it was ‘sung’ from the waters by the ancestor spirits [skybeings/starlore] the totems change to represent the next timeframe/epoch……The totemic creator spirit changes with every epoch.

One of the ancestor creator spirits was a Turkey….and he also has a Bootheram for his own epoch…The Turkey’s name was Wollumbin…the Tweed Caldera is the best example of an erosion caldera on the planet….Wollumbin Volcano Bootheram of the Turkey and the language of that song is in Galibal dialect…The Galibal were a tribe within the Ngarakbal area…….Gallibal is the sound of a Turkey, and the name of the tribe who hold his Bootheram.

The central plug of the Caldera was named Mt Warning by Captain James Cook when he ‘discovered’ and charted the [so-called] unclaimed east coast for the crown in 1770.

Recently it has had the dual-name of Wollumbin applied and recognised by the Geographical Name Board – who control the mapping.  They incorrectly gazetted the central plug alone, instead of to the whole Volcano that Wollumbin [the creator spirit] created way back in the dreamtime. As a result of this gazettal the ancient lore has been obscured,  because Wollumbin has also been incorrectly attributed to the dialect called Bundjalung…. Administrative bungle by government?….or deliberate move to rewrite history to their advantage?

This ‘administrative bungle’ occurred because the first Police Administrators, who also managed the Aboriginal Protections Boards [which is a nice administrative way of naming slave camps] in the late 1800’s were ordered to collect the languages of the Aboriginal peoples….and they incorrectly classified an entire region of Northern New South Wales as Bundjalung….which is the name of a tribe from the Widjabil who are one of the four groups in the moiety/cultural block of the Yoocum Yoocum…and in traditional lore and custom the Bundjalung tribe [proper] has no jurisdiction over Gallibal Land, Language or Lore.

Interestingly, Bungil-lung  is also part of  the ‘Lung’ Lore – another songline which travels up from the South Gippsland of Victoria along the east coast…. I won’t cover that now but will explain that in later posts….or subscribe to my newsletter for more in-depth info.

Anyway, the original name of the cultural block that the Ngarakbal and Githabal come from was the Yoocum Yoocum….but that fact had been stealthily buried as part and parcel of the conquering and claiming of the east coast of Australia – and as we all know, rewriting history to the benefit of the conquerors is the classic pattern that has occurred all over the planet…Cultural genocide essentially…..and there have been many wars written out of the historical records…including the fact that only the east coast of Australia was claimed by the Crown, because the other four fifths had been claimed by the Dutch….and these facts have also been conveniently obliterated from the contemporary records of today since the Boer War – British v’s the Dutch – ousted the Dutch and allowed for the Crown to claim the rest of the Australian continent. As you can see on this pre- Cook map of New Holland below….the east coast had not been charted, and therefore not claimed according to Northern Hemispheres laws of tenure.New Holand map -pre British

Anyway, back to the east coast history…..

Joshua Bray, the first Tweed/Byron Shires Police Magistrate collected the Ngarakbal’s linguistic records in the late 1800’s under orders from the crown who were busy fighting the Dutch at the time….Joshua Bray is pictured below

Using the legal process of applying Aboriginal language to landscape for the use of naming geographic features was required in order to oust the Dutch who had used their own language to map the west…..So,  Aboriginal language was used to validate the crown maps and thus their legal tenure of Australia….

These Police records of Joshua Brays Ngarakbal language were submitted as evidence to alter the gazettal of the name of Mt Warning to Wollumbin in the mid 2000’s – as part of the contemporary governments Reconciliation process of dual naming significant sites – Though government was recognising the Aboriginal significance of ancestral sites it was, at the same time, stealthily changing the ancestral attributions from the original truth [lore, land and language of the Yoocum Yoocum] to the administrative records of the Police [Bundjalung]….wiping out Yoocum Yoocum completely from the Lands records….This administrative sleight of hand trick then travels all the way up to the UN, and thus, the U.N Geographical Names Board now endorse the bogus historical referencing of Bundjalung.  The ancestral names on the maps have been sanitised and the ability for Aboriginal Native Title claimants to prove pre-colonial title of their own country has been thwarted……Cultural genocide. Pretty dastardly manipulative stuff isn’t it…..and yet another verse in the ancient Starlore Bootheram of the Ngarakbal and Githabal people .

Traditional Ownership of Ancestral Aboriginal Lore

In Traditional Aboriginal Lore and in accordance with current Cultural and Intellectual Copyright [moral rights],  Traditional Owners [Aboriginal People] are owners of land, and through it owners of songs, ceremonies and designs associated with that land, primarily by virtue of descent in a clan or estate group associated with a particular Tribal Estate.

Attributes such as place of conception and birth also have implications in relation to Traditional rights of ‘ownership’.  In all groups there is ownership of land, sites, ritual, stories, paintings, music, designs and so on; A set of attributes which are linked together…which comprise the Tribal Estate

There are clear distinctions with ownership of land by clans or estate groups, with mainly religious and symbolic significance, and use of land by bands, which has economic significance.

The Ngarakbal and Githabal own specific spiritual area’s,  or djuribil which are  extremely important to the individual and family who are ‘responsible’ for that area.  This principal  is fundamental to ones sense of identity, spirituality , and well being…This is a foundation truth associated with all the Traditional lore’s and customs of all the Marriage clans….

The djuribil sites have ‘clear’ owners, the djuribil are there for their individual use and protection.  Furthermore, it is dangerous for a person to go near another family’s djuribil without permission…or to reproduce Totemic Design, Song or Lore

Important fundamental connections and obligations to and for specific sites is stated by the  Githabul in the reports prepared by HLA-Envirosciences for the Dept of Environment & Heritage  for the Cultural Significance assessment for the Githabul  Native Title determination applications and subsequent transfer of the National Park properties in 2007

All land is sacred to Githabul people but there are places that are extra special.  There are powerful places like jurbihl sites…Jurbihl sites were created by the buthara [sic] people.  They are spirit ancestors of the Githabul people.  They taught us how to look after our country.  They were real people but they transformed themselves into djaru’s,  jali, springs and mountains…..informant B 2001:4

And Further:

Jurbihl could be an area, tree, rock or animal that belongs to that area. They’re clever.  They can make you sick or they can protect you.  You can call on them. They can be used for things.  These jurbihl are part of who we are.  You can take something from your jurbihl and keep it with you.  But you can only do that with your own jurbihl…”…Informant D 2001:5

..”…People should only talk about their own jurbihl, but only if they want to…We know those jurbihl are always there. They do not show themselves to everyone..”…Informant E 2001:5

…”…These sites are precious. It is part of who we are.  We need to look after these places…it would cause a great deal of harm to /Githabul people if those places were disrespected or interfered with..”…Informant D 2002:7

Githabul people have areas that are special for particular families.  They may have their jurbihl there.  There is jurbihl for our family.  Other families have their own places.  We inherit responsibilities and obligations to our country as well as it belonging to us in a physical way…Informant C 2002:3

…”…Marrying a Githabul person does not make that person Githabul.  They are of course accepted as one of the family and one of the community.  But they just would not be able to speak for Githabul people or about Githabul things…”….Informant C 2002:3
