Native Title – The Death Song of Mount Warning

Mount Warning – photograph by Vibrant Imaging http://www.vibrantimaging.com.au/

The ‘song of Mount Warning’, the central plug of the Wollumbin Caldera in the Northern New South Wales – South East Queensland cross-border region of eastern Australia, marks the beginning of an important Songline for the Matristic Lore Traditions of the Rainbow Serpent Seven Sister Skinlore Culture  – The marriage lore of the Australian continent from the Dreamtime.

Much ancestral Lore has become convoluted since colonisation, and even more so with the advent of State Native Title claims challenging the government’s authority and tenure to vast and lucrative tracts of land and water across the continent…..land and water laden with mineral wealth….so it is little wonder that some unscrupulous individuals claim to be able to claim native title and do so with the help of government funded services who seek to retain control of these vast assets.

Looking behind bureaucratic doors reveals how Aussie tax payers are paying for created Corporations to appropriate the ancestral ‘Songs and Songlines’ from out of the databases to be use as their own and even in court cases that empower corporate aboriginal lands councils to claim and develop public lands, and Indigenous Lands Use Agreements [ILUAs] to EXTINGUISH the inalienable rights of Origine’ Natives.

This has been allowed to occur due to a stylised form of ‘reverse racism’, skilfully marketed as Reconciliation, which has fostered a culture of “mustn’t ask too many questions and hurt anyone’s feelings”….creating a perfect environment for corruption to flourish.

This ‘culture’ has  developed over the last decade, empowering a free for all approach to native title claims, and ignores the cultural and intellectual copyright [moral rights] of the ‘real’ Origine’ custodians…..

Native Title services appears to basically aid and abet the confusion and division to escalate within the communities just as government had hoped by seeking genocidal ILUA outcomes.

What we are seeing happen again and again is the State Native Title Services [funded by the Government] repeatedly refusing to endorse any genealogical reports [of genuine Skinlore descendants who could claim native title] other than the ones their own Service has sanctioned –reports which often have garnered ancestral lore and attributed it to some unconnected corporation who [surprise surprise] isn’t too shy to sign off on State Development Projects.

It’s deplorable how shallow the ethics of academics have been forced. Creating new reports which no longer cite the Elders and Informants of the pre-development days…..every newly commissioned report edits just a little more out – with every new report crafted to facilitate the desire of developers….there’s obviously big bucks in the genocide of culture.

It’s become more and more apparent that Native Title and associated Government departments are only hiring or endorsing reports written by Archaeologists and Anthropologists who omit the original Skinlore descendant informants whom they had included in [their] previous reports…… For to not do so renders those Archaeologist and Anthropologists unemployable in this culture of administrative corruption.

Regrettably you don’t actually have to go back too far in the records to see how much history has been selectively ‘edited’ …anyone who can read can easily ‘measure’ past reports against what recent publications are utilised by government to discern which apical informants have been deliberately omitted…..and which developments profited.

In 1985 Margaret Gummow,  a linguist, recorded Mrs Millie Boyd [nee Williams] singing cultural song [Lore] about the Wollumbin Caldera…. Milli Boyd described the context in which her Aunt Lella Williams had created it….

The song  was recorded in full in the publication “ The Essence of Singing and the Substance of Song – Linda Barwick, Allan Marret and Guy Tunstall”  – It is call ‘The Mount Warning Song’ – it is a song about death and the immorality of greed…..it was used by Tweed Byron Aboriginal Lands Councils to claim land – but you won’t find any admission of that, or of the Elders identity in any of their publications anymore…..

https://trove.nla.gov.au/work/9821955?selectedversion=NBD26734077

“According to Boyd, Lella Williams was travelling with members of her family from Fingal Head back to Kyogle.  At that time there was no bridge on the Tweed River but a [“Old South Sea Islander”] man rowed a canoe along the river.  The man in the canoe took Lela Williams and her family to Uki, from which they intended to walk to Kyogle.

As the [Islander] man rowed the canoe he took some of Williams’s hair and threw it in a pool near Mount Warning.  This was a very dangerous thing to do.  It is believed that if someone takes some of your hair they may be able to perform acts of sorcery that can physically harm you.

When the canoe arrived at Uki, Williams began her walk to Kyogle, but she only survived three days longer.  At the bottom of the pool her hair had joined onto two bones, which began creaking as they rubbed together.

Margaret Gummow states that “In 1985 when I recorded Millie Boyd she described how Williams had sung this song at Mt Warning and the bones in the Tweed River and describes her feelings of despair as she felt she was unable to control her life. According to Boyd, four days after Lella Williams died her spirit sang this song to Jack Barron, a famous song man at Woodenbong”.

Margaret Gummow…”Yes, and so when did she sing the song”?

Millie Boyd…”after she died.  You know the aborigines’ spirit never die.  They come back, they give you the news of themselves, of their lives.  They sing songs of their own lives, of what’s happening to them, and the elder people listen and they understand who did this and did that and who didn’t do this. Yes, that’s in those times, but today the young people wouldn’t believe it.

You see young people these days, in my time, my people – They don’t believe it.

I believe it was given by God…All this business is given by god for them to use their spell and use it in the holy way”.

Gummow …”and so she sang the song after she died”?

Boyd…”yes, after she died in four days brought that song back to my grandfather, Jack Barron”.

Boyd herself learnt this song from her mother, Charlotte Williams [nee Brown], who learnt it from Jack Barron.

Gummow states that “To my knowledge there are four recordings of this song in existence, all performed by Boyd.  The first was recorded in 1977 by anthropologist Howard Creamer of the National Parks and Wildlife Service as part of a project concerning site protection.

I recorded the second performance in 1985 in relation to my PhD research on Bundjalung and Gidabal songs [Gummow 1992].

The linguist Margaret Sharpe recorded the third performance in 1989 in connection with a project funded by Aboriginal Legal Aide concerning the impact of land and land rights at Fingal Head.

[Minister Administering the Crown Lands (Consolidation) Act v Tweed Byron Local Aboriginal Land Council (1992) 75 LGRA 133 at 140 per Clarke JA]

The fourth performance was recorded on video in the early 1980s by Lorraine Mafi-Williams.  In an attempt to preserve traditional material, Mafi-Williams produced the film Eelarmarni in 1998, which featured Boyd explaining some of the mythology and singing several songs from the Mount Warning area”.

The selective editing of information no longer reflects the truth that the Fingal Lands Case used Ngarakbal Githabul Lore to claim the Fingal peninsular lands for the Tweed Byron Aboriginal Lands Council….a lands council which exclusively identifies itself as being a part of the governments Bundjalung Nation…a created system that refuses to acknowledge that the Ngarakbal Githabul are NOT Bundjalung and have never identified as such……and now, for the governments “ease of Administration”,  Fingal, and all lands within the Tweed Byron Aboriginal Lands Councils Boundaries are being wrongfully purported as belonging to Bundjalung Culture.

Some of the Northern Rivers NSW Aboriginal Lands Council Boundaries – map exert from NSWALC

Government departments are altering ancient Rainbow Serpent Culture and ‘gifting’ it to Three Bundjalung Brother migrants – from a relatively contemporary cultural epoch.

It should also be noted that Williams is a common name, and a lot of confusion over which Williams is which has also lined some unscrupulous pockets…

It is important to remember within the cultural lore contexts that all tribal family are related not in the immediate way that western society utilises, but in the tribal way…and Jack Barron was a tribal grandfather – through strict Skinlore kinship descent systems

One of the most important kinship tribal skin-lore relationships is “Mothers Brother”…Millie Boyd’s senior [surviving] ‘Brother’ was Stan Williams……In kinship lore a woman may not speak to her senior “brother’ and all rights of authority over the ancestral djurebil [sacred sites] for the family, including her children’s are held by her senior ‘Brother’…. at the same time a senior brother is also grandfather [as senior lore holder]…and the eldest born son of a woman is, in the tribal skin-lore, also grandfather, even to his own mother…..in this way, custodial rights, Bootheram Lore stories  and obligations are transferred…and,  in a similar manner they are passed down through the women.

Stan Williams was given, by his Elders, all initiation, lore, rituals, songs, dances and ceremonies of djurebil custodianship responsibilities for his Ngarakbal Githabal ancestral estate….and this in turn passed down to his senior son…and so on…

The legal interpretation of transference of ancestral Lore in Law is termed as Core and Contingent rights –   a senior lore holder has Core Rights of cultural knowledge, while all other siblings have Contingent Rights…..and in turn,  ‘determined’ native title groups have Core Rights , whilst Lands Councils only have contingent rights to ancestral lore and sites, etc….

Stan and Millie were two of nineteen children their parents Euston Williams and Charlotte Brown brought into the world – Post invasion and during the peak of colonisation of the much converted areas of the Byron, Tweed and Gold Coast regions of Australia.

Despite being born and held in Aboriginal Reserves administrated by the Aboriginal Protections Board, forced to stop speaking their ancestral language and cease their traditional culture, Euston and Charlottes marriage was still a traditional Skinlore marriage – A marriage between two tribal skin group moieties – Ngarakbal and Githabul – of the greater Yoocum-Yoocum society, which anthropologists refer to as a Cultural Block.

All Yoocum-Yoocum Skinlore kinships and descent is tracked through the star cycles by initiated Elders.  A significant stone complex located near the Pinnacle [Coowarragum] below Warazumbil [Border Ranges] between the Ngarakbal and Githabul estates was utilised for millennia to track these cycles and ensure healthy marriages between the Yoocum-Yoocum skin groups…tribal marriages [literally] made in heaven – with each individuals ancestral descent being able to traced back across [clusters of] 12 generation…… back to dreamtime…..

https://www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/things-to-do/walking-tracks/pinnacle-walk-and-lookout

Coowarragum – ‘Pumpinbil’ Pinnacle

It is a requirement of the Native Title Act for claimants to legally prove they have unbroken culture and descent – as one would expect…..

On April 20, 1998, Federal Court Justice Merkel handed down a 120-page decision in Shaw and Another v Wolf and Others. A key element in that judgment establishing the status of Aboriginality was the declaration that to be Aboriginal one must, among other things, be descended from the inhabitants of Australia at the time immediately BEFORE European settlement.

But imprudent claimants are attempting to prove their ancestry using the European concept of a family tree descent system which is totally unrelated to Origine’ Cultural Skinlore/Kinships and can only be traced within the timeframe of British occupation of Australia….. While Skinlore IS true culture which defines connection, obligation, authorisation, initiations and inter-relations both Pre and Post-Settlement….

The Government and its Courts utilising and recognising their own ‘imported’ European descent system in the native title process is, of course, completely contrary to the Acts requirement to prove unbroken culture…….the outcome?- Claimants traditional lore and custom is determined as unproven and so it’s a State ILUA and cultural Extinguishment.

Politicians and Developers are laughing all the way to the Bank

The Yoocum Yoocum Skinlore complex was located and recorded in 1980 by Adrian Piper- a senior archaeologist, who registered it on the National Parks and Wildlife Aboriginal Sites Registrar.

The land was purchased and protected by Rosalind Dunwell and her [then] husband Bill Mollinson, the co-creator of Permaculture, https://permacultureaustralia.org.au/2007/07/26/bill-mollison/

And the Skinlore knowledge of how the ‘site’ works was taught to me…….by Millie Boyd’s daughter…..

So while Europeans can conquer continents, import their man-made laws, create their courts, sanitise history, alter names on maps for court purposes, sanction suspect aboriginality claimants to sign off on corporate developments, and endorse claimants who ‘capture’ culture using unscrupulous methods……… the simple truth is that no matter how hard they try to eradicate the matristic Rainbow Serpent Culture, they will never EVER be able to rub out the stars from which it all descends.

Arrivals in the Land of the Bird Tribes…Part 1

Current Anthropological study of Aboriginal Mythology alongside of Genetic Science is allowing us to move out of the ‘flat earth’ theories of human evolution and propel us into the conscious understanding of the big picture of our true origins..…The ancient Mother Clans of the Bird Tribes of Australia

IMG_195253334027910

Lots of people from lots of places have come to the ancestral estate of the Ngarakbal and Githabal people over many thousands and thousands of years…Lots of different people from lots of different lands…..They are either refugees migrating to safer locations following cataclysmic earth events, or, they have come to trade resources, etc….some even stayed and, in time, became part of the Bird Tribes….

Bootheram is the Ngarakbal and Githabal word for the “Dreaming – Time before Time”…The oldest Bootheram are sacred stories of creation and they have corresponding ‘Djurebil’, which is the Ngarakbal/Githabal word for Sacred Sites within their ancestral landscape.

….”Sacred Sites are the locations where Spirit ancestors either burst forth into the landscape in the Dreamtime, or withdrew from it to a state of eternal vigilance….These sacred sites are strong because they have been sanctified energetically by the spirit ancestors.  As well as providing Earth energy to all living species they are also the location of spirit children and the importance of these sites is reaffirmed by ceremonial and ritual activities at these sacred places…..”…Voit & Drury; Wisdom from the Earth; p 73

Bootheram cycles and there are divisions of these cycles [epochs or ages]…. And, there are areas of ‘light and dark’ within the landscape features…and Ngarakbal/Githabal Lore protocols have specific  no-go zones depending on the divisions [gender, level of initiation, totem, protocol, skin descent, access rights, etc.]

Some of the ‘djurebil’ [sacred sites] have multiple Bootheram attached to them…they might be an ancestral creation place, but at the same time they might be the location of an historical event, like epic battles, encounters,  or arrivals of peoples from other lands –  and, just as creation sites ‘travel’ through the landscape, sometimes historical sites do too – like links in a chain of events…

For the Ngarakbal and Githabal, an historical Bootheram site marks the divisions of the epoch separation [cycles] between ancient matrilineal bloodlines [Feathered Serpent Traditions, or Bird Tribes – “who have always been here”] and the more contemporary patrilineal bloodlines [Three Brothers – “who arrived here”]….

Now, this challenges a lot of contemporary academic ideologies about who the original ‘people’ are…but rapid advances in Genetic Science has revealed that two distinct lines converge in Australia through MtDNA analysis ….This sheds new light on historical perceptions and we have to readdress the ‘academic oversight’s’ muddling ancient Bootheram and historical Bootheram together, which has caused masses of discord within the community…… divide and conquer devices the crown have used this discord in a very effective ‘divide and conquer’ strategy…This strategy has been instrumental in causing division within the people – most recently in regards Native Title claims against the crown…..It has also corrupted the original meaning within the ancestral Bootheram [which must NEVER change] and in the past 20 years [since Land Rights and Native Title] lots of skewered versions of the Three Brother story have been created…and most of those have been funded by the crown.

What the academics don’t include was the prior visitations and arrivals of people into Australia BEFORE 1770 – Pre-crown…also, the Native Title academics choose to omit the divisions of the matrilineal and patriarchal descent lore’s that govern the djurebil [sacred sites] and their respective access/custodianship rights, etc. for the djurebil sites in accordance with ancient traditional lore and custom…Completely ignoring the important Lore rites and the events of the division [cycles] within the Lore ….and this too has been an effective divide and conquer tactic.

So, let’s briefly look at some of the information that the crowns academics have ‘overlooked’….I’ll start with some maps [from the UK’s own Library] that show the prior arrivals PRE-CROWN……and work backwards from there….

New Holand map -pre BritishBefore the Crown, there was the Dutch – and here is the 1710 Cartographers depiction of New Holland, which is what they called the continent….

And before the Dutch was the Portuguese and their maps are dated 1536 and 1542 respectively….and then their maps got stolen by the French…

Desliens 1541 map east coast Aust

….”In the Lusitano-French maps of the world which originated in the year 1542 with Dieppe [above] cosmographers, such as Pierre Desceliers and his school, there is a continental configuration which of late has greatly exercised the historians of maritime discovery….That region, called then Jave-la-Grande.  No historian, no documents of the 16th century, mention the existence of such an Austral continent.  We also see it disappear from subsequent maps, until long afterwards,  when the region looms up again,  but this time as an alleged discovery accomplished by Dutch Navigators…That continental land, nevertheless, so far from being imaginary or an invention of cartographers was nothing else thatn Australia,  now justly considered by competent judges as having been discovered,  visited and named by unknown Portuguese mariners – whose maps furnished the cartographical data used in the Dieppe charts 60 or 70 years before the Dutch first sighted the shores of the extensive country…”…Henry Harrisse

Dauphin map - 1536……..”The providence of the Dauphin Map 1536 [above], too, is distinguished.  We know it was ordered by King Francis I of France, as a gift to his son Dauphin, later Henry II.  How it came to England we do not know,  but when we hear of it next it is owned by Edward Harley, Earl of Oxford, one of the principal Lords of the Admiralty in the early 18th Century.  On Harleys death in 1724 it was stolen by one of his servants,  and being stolen goods was hidden for the next few decades.  Dr Solander came to hear of it: and it was acquired by Sir Joseph Banks”…KG McIntyre

And that is how the English got to Australia….

..”I have a manuscript in my possession, belonging to Sir Joseph Banks…the very curious manuscript here mentioned is painted on parchment with the Dauphin Arms; it contains much lost knowledge;  Kerguelen’s Land seems plainly denoted;  the east coast of New Holland, as we name it, is expressed”…. Dalrymple- pamphlet on the Chagos Islands [McIntyre :344 ]

But before the Europeans arrived there had been many other visitors from the Northern Hemisphere…..more than 3,500 years BEFORE Cook and all the others the EGYPTIANS came to the Ngarakbal/Githabal lands….

…Near….“Brunswick Heads stands a mound which appears not to belong……..  Fred Fordham was a teacher at the Brunswick Heads Primary school and had heard the local tales that a grand ceremonial ground existed in the area where aborigines gathered from far and wide……Fred sent his notes and drawings and the answers were returned….. most of this correspondence and original work still exists in the valley…The answers were there.  The twisting path was a snake, a kangaroo and an emu were represented, the sun was present, plus a host of others ceremonial symbols.  There was only one thing wrong, which didn’t seem to worry Fred.   The entire layout, names and all were ancient Egyptology – the sun god Ra and many others appeared.  Fred could [still] get no backing and the second world war made people think of other things… – extract Oakes collection AIATSIS ; http:www.ancientwisdomoftheancestors.com – Sonya Van Gelder

Yes, there have been lots of visitors and migrations into the Australian Continent over thousands of years….but it goes back further …way, way back to when the first migrations arrived in the land of the Bird Tribes….which begins after an ancient war took place in the centre of the world….

The Bootheram also records the stories about the ancient war and the Bird Tribes traveling up to fight in those wars…But,  there were also arrivals to the land of the bird Tribes who were fleeing from that war…ancient refugees…They are known in the historical Lore of the Ngarakbal/Githabl as The Three Brothers, and they arrived into the ancient landscape of the Bird Tribes on the East Coast  because of this war……and there are records of these arrivals [and ensuring epic battles] occurring in many other ancestral Oral Lore histories in this continent…

At this point I should [clearly] point out that the arrival of the Three Brothers in the land of the Bird Tribes was dealt with by the Aboriginal people in their own PRE-CROWN version of Reconciliation way back – through a Marriage rite, known as the ‘Eelemarni’ –  and discord and division only reared up again as a result of Native Title [divide and conquer issue] incited by the crown….. But, in order to understand the division cycles within the ancestral and historical, we need to look at the historical Bootheram and understand it as Historical and unrelated to Creation Bootheram…and to do that, we have to look at Lore and geology….

The Land itself is the creation of the Spirit Ancestors – the Fairy Emu Dreaming [Bootheram] of Nguthungulli, the creation ancestor who ‘sings’ the landscape into being as he walks westward – He has Four Daughters and One Son, who become the Bird Tribes – and they were ‘made here, they didn’t arrive here –  this is Bird Tribe Lore – Alcheringa [ ancient epoch]……….Then, much later in time, historical events unfold…Now it is the landscape that becomes the enduring ‘keeper’ of both creation and historical events that have occurred at various locations on the land which the spirit ancestor created –  thus, corresponding ‘djurebil’  [sacred sites] are scattered within the landscape- layer upon layer – and this is why one site might have many Bootheram attached to it…..

Bootheram are taught to the whole of the community under the careful guidance of the Elders who are consulted in regards to the correct meanings, rituals and responsibilities to those sacred places….The whole community learns the same Bootheram, but, the Higher knowledge may only be spoken of by the fully initiated Senior [Boss] Elders whose have obtained the full knowledge of the meaning, language, song, dance sequences and ritual associated with the site…..the Higher Lore is kept ‘closed’ as it contains elements considered too sacred for the uninitiated or of the wrong ‘Skin’ to know prior to undergoing appropriate initiation into the custodial Lore of a specific site….In Githabal and Ngarakbal Lore no-one is allowed to narrate or perform until correct consultation with the Senior Initiated [Boss] Elders is obtained in the correct ritual manner – this traditionally takes days or weeks because the ancestral lore has a defined sequence of protocols that must be strictly followed…….This ensures that the ancient lore is respected and remains intact for all time.

”Amongst the different regional groups, the sacred knowledge of myth, song, ritual and ceremony – linked with sacred sites – is passed orally from generation to generation.  This knowledge also relates to the meaning of ‘country’, and has a practical function – it helps to differentiate groups of people and it also defines tribal rights to land and resources.  Such knowledge is never the sole possession of an individual but is held by a group of people who have been initiated into custodianship of that land and therefore have a right to the sacred information that is associated with it….”…Voit & Drury – Wisdom of the Earth

One Historical Sacred Site in the Ngarakbal/Githabal lands is bordering the Widjabil [Bundjalung proper] ancestral estate and records the scene of an epic battle between the Ancestral Mother Clans and one of the ‘Three Brothers’ who came to the Bird Tribe lands long, long ago…This epic battle took place at what is now known as Nimbin Rocks… The correct Ngarakbal word is ‘Nimbinje’…but, Nimbin was the closest Europeans could get to pronouncing it  – ….another sacred site [with multiple Bootheram associations] that links to the historical Bootheram is Mt Burrell/Blue Knob which to the Ngarakbal and Githabal is known as ‘Biorgini’ and it is the home of the ‘Wind Spirit’

‘Nimbinje’ means ‘Hairy Man’ in the Ngarakbal/Githabal language…and this Nimbinje, from Biorgini was from the ancestral Bird Tribe…..and could commanded the Wind with sacred ‘songs’ and rituals….

Three Brothers [Historical] Bootheram has been recorded and published many times.  The earliest was recorded in 1892….It is known as ‘The Legend of the Three Brothers’.

The following excerpt from a publication by Rev. Livingstone in 1892 more or less summaries the legend of the Three Brothers arrival in the land of the Mother Clans

….“Long ago Beerung,  with his two brothers Mommon and Yaburong came to this land.  They came with their wives and children in a great canoe, from an island across the sea.  As they came near shore a woman on the land made a song that raised a storm which broke the canoe in pieces….this is how the paigal [men] came to this land…”…

And this arrival happened after a great war in the centre of the earth…..but that’s another Bootheram…

I will post the Ngarakbal/Githabal Elders narration of the Three Brothers arrival in Part Two of Ancient arrivals to the Land of the Bird Tribes… So, If you would like to receive automatic notification of future posts to this site then subscribe to my newsletter… And for more info on the Egyptians visiting the East Coast of the continent check out Sonya Van Gelders website- Ancient Wisdom of the Ancestors at http:www.ancientwisdomoftheancestors.com …it’s located in the links …Hoo Roo

The Metaphor of the Ice-Ages in Ancient Aboriginal Lore

Australian Bird Tribe Lore is older than anything you will read in any library on this planet…..it comes from the “time before time”….If you know how to understand the levels of the metaphoric information you start to realise that it covers just about every type of scientific discipline known to modern man, and then some…..

glacier 2

Modern Science is only just starting to appreciate how eloquently the ancient oral Bootheram bears testimony to the endurance of the Bird Tribes and their traditions to survive [thrive] throughout time; and recognise it as a priceless global heritage which has long been overlooked and undervalued

We have been conditioned to think that the Australian Indigenous ‘Dreamtime’ stories, which the Ngarakbal and Githabal call Bootheram, are just nice little parables about people, animals and the like [and, actually some Bootheram are just that too]….BUT; within some of the Oral Traditional Lore is profound ancient truth recording the geological, biological, geomagnetic climate events that the ‘Bird Tribe’ ancestors witnessed ‘way, way back in the time before time’…..and these truths are portrayed in Metaphor.

The ancient oral records must NEVER be changed – the penalty; Death…..Now, this doesn’t necessarily mean death by homicide….for this too is a metaphor…..It meant death by ignorance….Perishing, or ‘extinguishment’, as a result of not faithfully maintaining and following the Traditional Customary Lore…..and there is good reason for that…..

volcano 1The ancient cultural knowledge explains everything you need to know about how to survive….It teaches how to survive when the earth is bountiful and stable – ie, cultural knowledge [and totemic responsibilities] for species increase, firestick farming, boundaries, access rights, trade etc…BUT, it also teaches how to survive when the earth is NOT bountiful or stable  – ie; climate change, volcanism, meteorite impacts, etc [and totemic knowledge of what to watch for celestially]….and, it even has mechanisms of how to survive all the associated problems of triggered Ice Ages; Sea-level’s rising and falling, genetic isolation , maintaining and protecting water and food resources, etc….

This important knowledge is taught and celebrated through ceremonial song, dance, stories and traditional tribal design motif’s….that’s the traditional cultural way….In a perfect world it would be revered and respected to remain unchanged as a LIVING LIBRARY…..and in ancient times it was…..and for very good reason….

As we all know, the Earth has cycles…Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter…and these are linked to celestial cycles – orbits, etc….Bootheram recognises and records this too…….Modern science is only just beginning to unravel the mysteries of our Earth and it’s place in the cosmos and the cycles within the solar system and beyond….and Bootheram records this also…Cycles are about Change…..The ‘old people’ accepted change as an inevitable part of nature….they knew about cycles….and they consciously choose to live in harmony with these cycles…..and there is a very good reason for this..

…”Our Bootheram is like white man’s science…and in many ways it’s better than it….The scientists have only just started figuring out what our old people always knew….about the stars, and the cycles and the water and the animals and the people…how it all works together…..they didn’t listen…what the old people were telling them about back then…. they couldn’t understand then and they’re still catching up” ……….Marlene Boyd

earths magnetic fieldOne of Earths cycles as it journeys through the universe affects the geo-magnetic field of our planet….Geomagnetism is what holds our Earths Polar Axis steady – Magnetic ‘Mother Sun’ on one side and ‘Father Moon’ on the other dance around us, keeping our seasonal cycles even as we journey through the greater universe…..this present cycle of ‘steady seasons’ gave the northern hemisphere tribes time to develop agriculture and centralised habitation over the last 10 – 15, 000 years……which is quiet the polar opposite of the conscious seasonal/nomadic existence of the Australian tribal peoples….for a very good reason

The indigenous ‘nomadic’ lifestyle has historically been portrayed as evidence of the Australia moieties being prehistoric and primitive……The northern hemispheres ‘Roman’ concept of defining a ‘primitive’ peoples was there being no evidence of agriculture amongst the Aboriginal peoples [which isn’t correct either – they do…but we’ll save that for another time]…..Anyway, the action of tilling the soil became the legal ‘Act’ which was used to validate the crowns occupation and tenure of ‘Terra Nullius’ – Captain Cook sailed into Sydney, turned a sod of dirt over on Possession Island – as an act of agriculture – and then planted a flag and claimed Australia for the crown….yes, that’s all it took – according to the crown’s laws and customs…..and ignoring the sovereignty of the Aboriginal peoples Lore…

So…… let’s get back to why there is a very good reason for the [very] conscious choice of the moieties upholding the ancestral Traditional Lore Customs ways and not relying on European agricultural cropping/farming concepts…preferring to live in harmony with all species [‘Skins’] instead of tilling the soil and using mono-culture farming practices …..

As a very ancient isolated island mass – removed from the Northern Hemisphere Cultures and being the last continent to be invaded [only 240+ years ago ]  the ancestral Lore has survived, and thankfully so, because the ‘old people’  knew about Earth Cycles……Earth’s cycles linked to even greater celestial cycles….….and how these greater cycles affect earths [and it’s planetary neighbours] geomagnetism and cause climate change events cyclically….which is very important knowledge…..It’s known as Star Lore ..and it’s intrinsic to Survival.

IMG_335817943612431

Modern Science has been busy leaning about Earths geomagnetism and been able to verify that our planets geomagnetic strength drops and reverses approx. every 250,000 years…these figures have been obtained from drill samples that show 160 million years of cyclic climatic data about the Earth……The reversal events match increased volcanism, meteorite impacts and sea levels cycles since the planet began…….However, there is one distinct exception to the 250,000 year cycle and it’s got the science fraternity very worried……Data is showing that our planet has not had a geomagnetic reversal for the last 750,000 years – and so it’s LONG overdue……Now; they are increasingly worried because their data is showing that during the past decade our poles have migrated 1500km off the ‘normal’ axis… [North and South Pole respectively]……and are continuing to migrate….lots of volcanic activity is occurring – like Yellowstone and India, etc…and lots of wild weather [natural disasters] have been occurring globally during the same 10 year period……

Our planets weakening geomagnetic field is what Scientists believe atmosphereallowed our atmosphere to escape into space in past ‘extinction’ events…Magnetics dropped, oxygen escaped, and masses of species died of asphyxiation…. Currently the atmospheric data is showing that there is a large hole over Brazil…Scientists are monitoring closely…..so are Sovereign Tribal Nations…

The Scientists have also found that [contrary to public belief] the earth does not flip over or roll around in space when the geomagnetic field reverses [making the new north pole Hawaii, or where-ever] and nor does the drop in gravitational force mean that things float off the surface of the earth….No, that doesn’t’ happen at all…..the magnetism just stops….our atmosphere leaks into space….gravitational fields neutralise, and then the magnetic field reverses; and that makes compasses [which currently always point North]  point South instead…it happens fast – according to the data…..As you’d expect it also causes a lot of climatic chaos in the process…escaping atmospheric oxygen, increase in volcanism, meteorite impacts and the like…Bootheram records the same information and also ‘sings’ about the continental drift changing direction and the planet reversing its spin…..in metaphor..

satelites esa trioPresently, because Earth’s geomagnetic field is failing [it’s already weakened by 10% ] the European Space Authority has launched a trio of satellites to learn as much as they can about geomagnetic reversals, as quickly as possible…….they are passing wave frequencies through the planet to measure Earths magnetic field

I must point out that my intention is not intended to scare anyone in regards geomagnetic polar reversal, or profess to be a scientific expert – I’m not….I’m explaining why Bird Tribe Bootheram is so important and must NEVER be changed…..and for your convenience I have provided a whole heap of links about geomagnetic polar reversal at the end of this post so you can check out what the scientists are finding for yourself…..now, back to the Bootheram……

7 sisters 3Earth events [caused by celestial cycles] like Geomagnetic reversals are embedded in the Bootheram metaphoric Lore; and align with the Seven Sisters ‘Skin Lore’- The Ngarakbal and Githabal call the ‘Seven Sisters’ [Pleiades] Waringeh or Waringge:n and they bring the Cold [ie; Ice Ages]…Warick is known as ‘Waring Waring’ and is a ‘djurebil’ [sacred site] for the Ngarakwal/Githabal Bird Tribes…… Seven Sisters traditions are held in many global tribal cultures…..Most of them, including the Roman’s, refer to them as also being BIRDS….but we won’t digress into that just yet as this post is about the Metaphor of Ice Ages in the Ngarakbal and Githabal Bird Tribe Bootheram….the Ngarakbal Githabal are descendants of the Carpet-snake Clans from the Feathered Serpent Traditions…the most ancient lore of the continent

glacier 5Ok, so……..One such Bootheram of the Githabal and Ngarakbal peoples is Dirrangun at Tooloom, and it tells of the END of an Ice Age….the characters who are portrayed within this are given the physical values of being human’s or dogs or trees, etc…it reads like a nice little story about a witch who steals water….but in reality these characters are metaphors for glaciers, planets, mountains and also chronological markers of climatic events……Traditional Bootheram have accompanying songs, dances and ceremonies so that the entire community can keep the knowledge of these events, remember to live in harmony with all species [‘Skins’] – and thus survive together – Cause wouldn’t the world be a sad place without all the colour and biodiversity of the ‘Skins’……Everything is connected and deserves protection and respect….simple…

So that’s why Traditional Bootheram Lore is NEVER allowed to be changed and should never EVER be overlooked or undervalued… …It should be RESPECTED and REVERED always ….Historically, the survival of Humanity depends on it….

Enjoy reading this beautiful Bootheram about Tooloom Falls in Githabal country…..and have a go at decoding the metaphors..

Dirrangun at Tooloom – by Mr Euston Williams– Githabal –  it was recorded in the 1950’s…as part of the civil rights movement

Euston Williams

Some people say that Dirrangun is a witch, that she’s mean and cunning and brings you all the mischief in the world.  Others say that she’s friendly.  But she’s a very old woman and she has long hair down to her knees.

Dirrangun had two married daughters and a son-in-law.  This son-in-law was a buloogan, a well-built, handsome man.  The daughters of the Dirrangun were his two wives.

As far as I can make out from the old people, these two daughters quarrelled with their mother and the buloogan took the quarrel up and sided with his two wives. They starved the old woman; they didn’t pass her anything to have a feed.

Dirrangun’s camp was under a big fig-tree, here at this waterfall which is the source of the Clarence River. There was a basin here, a hollow in the rock, which contained the water.  Tooloom now is the white man’s name for this waterfall.  Tooloom is the nearest they could get to saying Dooloomi.

While the son-in-law and his two wives were out hunting and gathering food, Dirrangun drained the water out of the pool with a bark coolamon.  Some people say that she put the fire out, too, so that there was no fire in the world.

When the buloogan and his two wives came home in the evening there was no water.  The wives were running about all over the place looking for water.  But there was no water.  Dirrangun had put leaves and bark over the empty basin hole in the rock so that the place was hidden.  For two or three days the buloogan and his wives could not get a drink.

Dirrangun was pretending to cry for them.  Some people say Dirrangun was sitting on this coolamon of water in her camp, hiding it.  These people say that when the buloogan found this out, he got angry and cried, “well, your not going to have all the water! I’ll let it out!” He thrust his spear into that coolamon, biggi  we call it, and let it out.

Others say that when Dirrangun, the buloogan and his two wives went to sleep,  the buloogan’s  two dogs,  who were thirsty found the water which Dirrangun had hidden in the coolamon.  You see those two mountains? They were called  Dillalea and Kalloo-Guthun.  They are named after those two dogs.

In the night those two dogs returned to the camp of the buloogan and stood over him.  And the water dripped from their mouths.  When the buloogan  felt this he woke up.  He followed the two dogs back to where Dirrangun was asleep with the hidden water.

rain on a glacier 2When the buloogan  saw where the water was hidden, he was angry.  He made a big rain, a big down-pour rain.  The hollow rock basin began to fill.  The water rose and rose and backed up where this creek is now.

Some say that when the water began to rise Dirrangun climbed into the fig-tree and made a platform in the boughs.  But the water rose and swept her and the fig-tree away and left this hollow beneath these cliffs where the waterfall is now.

Morteon bay fig 2 (2)Dirrangun was holding on to the fig-tree as she was swept away.  She was swept over the second fall, which we call Ngalumbeh.  At the bottom of this fall she was whirled round and round, still holding on to the fig-tree, in a whirlpool for half a day.

The water was getting stronger and stronger.  The buloogan had cursed the water to make it unmanageable.  It took her and the fig-tree away down the Clarence River.  From time to time Dirrangun would sit in the torrent with her legs wide apart trying to block the water, but each time the flood would bear her away.

Where the South River comes into this river, Dirrangun sat with her legs outspread.  The water rose and went up and made the South River.  There she sat until the flood rose and swept her and the fig-tree on again.

fig on the riverBelow Grafton on the river there is a fig-tree growing.  Many old men would see that fig-tree and say, “Oh look! Dooloomi borrgun!”. This means, “that fig-tree belongs to Tooloom!”.  Those old men would say, “Dirrangun. She’s away down there, but she belongs up there at Tooloom.”And I am told that Dirrangun is still in that fig-tree below Grafton.

THE MYTH OF THE MOUNTAIN – JULGUMBUN

Mount Lindesay is the most significant sacred site of the Githabal people…the Githabal are the marriage clan of the Ngarakbal…these two ancient volcano clans are located on the most eastern point of the Australian continent, where the first light of magnetic ‘Mother Sun’ rises from the ocean and awakens the whole land……

IMG_63454008159641

The Ngarakbal and Githabal Bootheram [Dreaming lore] is inextricably interlinked….Bootheram tells of the creation of the land and all the inhabitants of the land….Plants and animal, fish and birds, everything has a Bootheram – and all Bootheram is interlinked…..its Native Science held in oral format and celebrated and related through song, dance and ceremony…Ancient truths held in metaphoric lore….Contemporary scientist’s and physicists would find correlation in disciplines such as morphogenetic’s, crystallography, biology, geology, and hydrology, to name but a [mere] few….the Githabal and Ngarakbal Bootheram is totally beautiful stuff…..and why wouldn’t it be….for they have grown along with this landscape throughout time and space.

I want to share with you a creation Bootheram about Mount Lindesay that was related to Phinney MacPherson [who managed to ensure to name a substantial portion of the landscape after himself when he surveyed it for the crown]…..Anyway, the important person in this is the Githabal Elder who he recorded this Bootheram from…it was a Mr Euston Williams…..Mr Williams was the husband of Charlotte Brown, a Ngarakbal woman from the Tweed Caldera…..Charlotte sang the Ngarakbal ‘portion’ of the Fairy Emu Dreaming [transcontinental songline] about her ancestral country and it’s central significant/sacred Mountain – Wollumbin……

Now, Euston and Charlotte were instrumental in the Civil Rights campaigns of the 1950’s….during those times the crown did not recognise Aboriginal people as being human, and had crudely ‘classified’ them under the Flora and Fauna legislations of the day….back then, one of the prerequisites for legally being a human being was to have an identified religion….So, Euston and Charlotte, along with many other Senior Elders agreed to start speaking & singing about their ‘religion’…they spoke their truth…Bootheram- LORE…and many other Senior Elders from their respective ancestral countries joined them right across the country…..collectively they campaigned for more than a decade [it’s an awesome story]….In 1967 after mounting pressure from the Australia public  the crown rescinded the flora and fauna classification and human rights were granted……the collective force of a positive campaign to speak their ancient truth produced a positive outcome….morphic field resonance…..Bootheram

The Myth of the Mountain by Eustan Williams

….”Look at that mountain standing up, see how it goes straight up on it’s sides. No man can climb that mountain.  Look at it’s head, through the mist, covered with trees.  I worked as a chainman to Phinney MacPherson, the surveyor, right along this range and, when we come to Jalgumbun, he says to me, “Now Eustan, let me see them steps you say are cut out in this mountain”.  And I pointed out them steps. He stood there, writing in his notebook the story of the mountain that I told him………………That mountain Jalgumbun was once a tree”.Mt Lindsay pic

.”A man went after honey in that tree. He climbed up with the vine-rope round himself and round the tree. And as he climbed he cut footholds with his stone axe.  And his wives were waiting in the forest down below.

“Where are you?”, they called out.  And he called back, “I’m chopping out the honey”.  At last he called out, “”Here it is” and rolled the piece of wood with all the honey in it down to the butt and big roots of the tree.  They sat down in that camp and ate that honey and travelled then away along the range.

That night there was no moon. The women looked out into the night and whispered to each other “oh look what is that ‘something’ over there”….”oh its like a shadow, see, that ‘something’ over there is blocking out the stars”.

And in the morning when they woke they saw the mountain that was never there before. Jalgumbun, standing up against the sky.

Well there’s a tree called Jalgumbun that grows here in the ranges.  It has real soft skin.  The fellas from the mill at Urbenville come with their axes, tractors and their gear, and fell and lop them trees and drag them out from the ranges of their native home….”………

Beautiful stuff Bootheram….It has many layers….and the strength of these beautiful people to keep their traditional lore and custom aflame is an inspiration…..and their is so much more…..if you are interested subscribe to my newsletter….Hoo roo

Traditional Ownership of Ancestral Aboriginal Lore

In Traditional Aboriginal Lore and in accordance with current Cultural and Intellectual Copyright [moral rights],  Traditional Owners [Aboriginal People] are owners of land, and through it owners of songs, ceremonies and designs associated with that land, primarily by virtue of descent in a clan or estate group associated with a particular Tribal Estate.

057_lindsay
Mt Lindsay – ‘Julgunboong’ significant sacred site of the Githabal

Attributes such as place of conception and birth also have implications in relation to Traditional rights of ‘ownership’.  In all groups there is ownership of land, sites, ritual, stories, paintings, music, designs and so on; A set of attributes which are linked together…which comprise the Tribal Estate

There are clear distinctions with ownership of land by clans or estate groups, with mainly religious and symbolic significance, and use of land by bands, which has economic significance.

The Ngarakbal and Githabal own specific spiritual area’s,  or djuribil which are  extremely important to the individual and family who are ‘responsible’ for that area.  This principal  is fundamental to ones sense of identity, spirituality , and well being…This is a foundation truth associated with all the Traditional lore’s and customs of all the Marriage clans….

The djuribil sites have ‘clear’ owners, the djuribil are there for their individual use and protection.  Furthermore, it is dangerous for a person to go near another family’s djuribil without permission…or to reproduce Totemic Design, Song or Lore

Important fundamental connections and obligations to and for specific sites is stated by the  Githabul in the reports prepared by HLA-Envirosciences for the Dept of Environment & Heritage  for the Cultural Significance assessment for the Githabul  Native Title determination applications and subsequent transfer of the National Park properties in 2007

Charlotte Page -NNTT

All land is sacred to Githabul people but there are places that are extra special.  There are powerful places like jurbihl sites…Jurbihl sites were created by the buthara [sic] people.  They are spirit ancestors of the Githabul people.  They taught us how to look after our country.  They were real people but they transformed themselves into djaru’s,  jali, springs and mountains…..informant B 2001:4

[HLA-Envirosciences Pty Ltd – for the Dept of Environment & Heritage May 2006]

And Further:

Jurbihl could be an area, tree, rock or animal that belongs to that area. They’re clever.  They can make you sick or they can protect you.  You can call on them. They can be used for things.  These jurbihl are part of who we are.  You can take something from your jurbihl and keep it with you.  But you can only do that with your own jurbihl…”…Informant D 2001:5

..”…People should only talk about their own jurbihl, but only if they want to…We know those jurbihl are always there. They do not show themselves to everyone..”…Informant E 2001:5

…”…These sites are precious. It is part of who we are.  We need to look after these places…it would cause a great deal of harm to /Githabul people if those places were disrespected or interfered with..”…Informant D 2002:7

Githabul people have areas that are special for particular families.  They may have their jurbihl there.  There is jurbihl for our family.  Other families have their own places.  We inherit responsibilities and obligations to our country as well as it belonging to us in a physical way…Informant C 2002:3

…”…Marrying a Githabul person does not make that person Githabul.  They are of course accepted as one of the family and one of the community.  But they just would not be able to speak for Githabul people or about Githabul things…”….Informant C 2002:3

Transcontinental Songline begins in Ngarakbal Githabal Country

Creative journeys abound in  Aboriginal Mythology. Two cross the Australian continent & begin from ‘Cugin’ [Cudgen] in the ancestral lands of the Ngarakbal Githabal moieties….

IMG_1250516456443031

The following Bootheram is called the Fairy Emu Dreaming and is one of several ‘Bootherams [Dreaming Lores] about the totemic journey of the ancestor creator spirits across the land.  It was recorded from Charlotte Brown in the 1950’s…….Charlotte Brown was the Ngarakbal wife of Githabal man Euston Williams…

The Fairy Emu Dreaming

…”….A big rock stands in the sea six miles from Byron Bay

A man named Nguthungulli made that rock. Nguthungulli is our Father.

He’s the Father of the whole world.

He’s the man we’ve got to be afraid of.

No matter what we do wrong, or where we do it, He’ll know.

And no man has seen Him.

IMG_295163766702405 - seanoshea.com (1)

“….Nguthungulli had a cave in the rock.  After he made the rock, he told the four fairy woman, ‘gilarmavell’, to stay there…”.

“….Then he went away from there and walked inland from the coast.  He traveled over the mountains with his dog Korung.  He had a walking stick, and when he put the stick into the ground He left behind a stone like a basin..”…..

…”As he traveled He left the bean-trees, and He named the different places on His journey.  He named Woodenbong [where we are now], Nguthumbung.”

“He went over the range to the head of the Condamine.  When he knelt down at the river to drink, He left his handprints there in the stone…”…….

“….Nguthungulli went away out into the desert, towards the sunset.  In our language we say that Nguthungulli is away out in the Borrgorr now that means the sea. …”…..

“…The old people knew that the sea was out there.  They knew that whichever way the butheram, the story of Nguthungalli went, it was towards the sea, Borrgorr.  You can hear the sound of the sea in that word.  They had seen then that we were on an island.”……….

“….Nguthungulli has big rocks in the Borrgorr,  the sea, where he lives today.  Out in the caves in those rocks in the sea, Nguthungulli has four daughters and one son.  And his son is called Yar Birrain…”….

Ngarakwal [Yoocum] Totemic Lore as told by Charlotte Williams [nee Brown] of the Ngarakwal Githabal moieties – East Coast Australia……The name Yar Birrain has several meanings , one of which is “First Light”….The summit of this sacred Mountain [known as Mt Warning] is the first land in Australia to receive the dawn rays of ‘Mother Sun’….

Eelemarni – Marriage Lore of the Ngarakbal and Githabal

Traditional Aboriginal Lore is held in story, song and dance;  and Marriage Lore has its own specific songs and dances within that greater Traditional Lore and Custom…..In the Ngarakbal and Githabal moieties the marriage lore is known as the Eelemarni…..It is the first verse of the ancient song line pathway that flows across the Australian continent from the eastern most point to the west coast…Collectively these marriage songs and dances are a foundation part of the Seven Sisters Starlore,

7sisters-web_1150195279

Each ancestral country respectively ‘holds; their portion of the song[line] in their own specific ancestral dialect, in their own ancestral country……These ancient lore’s are the base ‘contracts’ of tribal boundaries, access and trade throughout the individual countries cultures.

Traditional Aboriginal Lore dictates that correct marriages MUST follow ‘right skin’ – ‘Skin’ is an individuals totemic birth right association to country….Lore Land and Language are LINKED and must never be changed.

Skin marriages are arranged by senior Elders who hold the knowledge of the correct totemic ‘Skin’ that each individual is born into.  It is this personal ‘Skin’ totem classification that dictates who you can or can’t marry….‘Skin’ Totems are, essentially, an ancient form of recording matrilineal DNA genetics….. Skin Lore provides vital information on maintaining and  strengthening  the health and wellbeing of the moieties throughout time…

Through these sacred stories, songs and dances linkages are maintained right across Australia and record the inter-relationships between the people, the land, and the universe…..as in the Flower of Life

flower of life and cells

The Ngarakbal and Githabal Lore of the Eelemarni was made into an award winning short film in the 80’s

Eelemarni cover 1

Here is a Bootheram [Dreaming Lore] of the Eelemarni…

“DAWNTIME…when all creation was created – there were also people of the Spirit World made.  Now the name of the Good Spirit people is Wooyun.  They are a kind of fairy people.  You may behold these people for they look like ordinary mortals,  but they are only seen for a little while ….

It happened that one day the fairy people were traveling down to Coogen Heads and with them was a lovely young fairy girl.  Now this girl had been promised in marriage to a young man brave as he was handsome,  for he was in charge of a Bora Ring – the sacred Ring – to where all young men must go for the initiation Ceremony so that they may be proclaimed men of their tribe.  For a man to be placed in charge of a Bora Ring he must indeed be a good man,  so all the people of the tribe many know that he is worthy to be placed in charge of the SACRED BORA Ring.

When the time had come that the young fairy woman had reached womanhood she thought of the man,  the young man to whom she had been given in marriage when a child.  The dawn had kissed many days and the stars had kissed many nights since she had seen him last.  Then one day she saw him in at Coogen Heads – she knew he was the man to whom she was promised in marriage – for her heart told her so.

When the battle had been fought at Coogen Heads, the young man went to his home at Meeahan, which is the name by which Crown Mountain  was known to the tribe of the young man.  So the fairy woman set forth to seek her lover – she came to Meehaan, and the people of there told her “yes ! the young man whom you seek and who will be your husband came home but is gone again”..So she set forth on her journey of seeking her husband,  carrying with her the bark of the Ti-tree, she had brought with her from Coogen Heads….. Charlotte Williams [nee Brown]

Below is a Lands Dept map from 1890 showing Cudgen Heads….today this area is know known as Kingscliff
