Aboriginal spiritual significance of Cudgen – Tweed Coast – Australia

Cudgen on the Tweed Coast is a significant creation site for the Ngarakbul and Githabul moiety…..Lore Land and Language are linked…..

“I want to share with you an important creation event from the Ngarakbul Githabul Bootheram Lore about how Tweed Coast area of Cudgen got its name, and how our warriors know when to hunt the grey kangaroo flock,  gurumanmari”….

It is called  a “Boodharam gawari”, which means story ‘run’, or Songline, with all of the associated djurebil, sacred sites, connected across the landscape, and in the sky”….

Stan Williams - Duroom - age 34 - Woodenbong - Tindale“Stan Williams was my Grandfather, his mother was Charlotte Brown from the Ngarakbul estate, of the Tweed Volcano – Charlotte was the daughter of Mary Brown, a full blooded Ngarakbul woman, who had seven children….four daughters and three sons ….all of them married proper tribal skin lore way, following the sacred starlore cycles, within triangles of each clans respective territorial boundaries“…

“The following is a Bootheram Mr James Morgan gave my Grandfather Stan Williams to protect and teach…. this same Bootheram gawari [story run] has been faithfully passed down in my family since the Alcheringa , the beginning….. It explains our country and  links our people to it through Lore Land and Language – since the Dreaming ”……

“Its called , Goodgin Guruman Boojeram”

“A handsome man Buluggahn who lived in the Dreamtime, the Alcheringa, when the world was just beginning went out hunting everyday”…

“One day when he was down at the sea ‘burgur’,when  he saw a buck grey kangaroo – Guruman, is what we call him……..So Buluggahn cast his spear, ‘bilahru’…….He hit that Guruman,’bilahru bira’ but the spear did not kill the animal…it only wounded the Guruman”….

“That ‘bilahru’ had gone  into the kangaroo’s thigh…but when the Buluggahn came close to the animal to pick it up and take it back to the camp, it struggled to its feet and hopped away”…..

“The Buluggahn followed after that wounded kangaroo…He could see he was badly wounded, losing a lot of blood  and he took pity on him ‘gidhir’…so Buluggahn, who was a powerful Wayun – cleverman- collected the earth with Guruman’s blood and painted it under his eyes and across the bridge of his nose and  began singing a magic song, ‘jingan’, to make that Guruman stop and go to sleep, ‘ngurahm”….Burrigan Goodgin Djurebil

“But the Guruman was a spirit animal, a totem, and knew what was happening…. he wasn’t going to give up easily …he fought the magical ‘jingan’ urging him to sleep….and he fled as fast as he could into the ancient Hoop Pine forests of the coastal range, desperate to escape his fate”…..

“Wherever the Guruman leapt, blood, ‘gumar’, dripped from the wound that the Buluggahn spear, ‘bilahr’, had made in his thigh ….his ’gumar’ seeping all over the coastal range”…

“All the while the Buluggahn continued tracking him,  through the pine forest, then into the rainforest, always singing his, ‘jingan’ magic song……..and every time  he got close to Guruman that Kangaroo would summon his strength and leap away”….

Cudgenbil waterhole --Braeside turn off“Soon Guruman became thirsty….He stopped to drink at a river ‘Wayal Balun’ , that means river in our language, and it also means Milkyway,  and his blood dripped into the waterhole…we call that waterhole ’Cudgenbil’,  near Uki….that’s a Rainbow Serpent djurebil there- part of the Women’s Water Lore,  its sacred there …..the Rainbow Serpent Grandmother Warazum is our moieties protector,  but not to strangers…strangers shouldn’t  go swimming there… Warzum will punish strangers…. and send buban, floodwaters” ……

“After he quenched his thirst Guruman continued on …….On and on the kangaroo went… still bleeding…with the Buluggahn singing him…..until at last, exhausted he came to a sacred mountain…. There was a cave, a ‘birman , in the mountain…”…..

“Guruman knew his time was short ‘gubanjahy’…so using the last of his strength he crawled into the birman cave, and there, he died…………Juluhnnggi, that means died, in Ngarakbul Githabul dialect”….

“No sooner had the kangaroo died than ‘jingan’ the Buluggahn’s magic song turned Guruman’s ’gumar’ in the earth to goodgin [cudgen], the red clay paint that warriors wear”…..

Cudgenbil waterhole - buban - flood“All through the land, at every place that Guruman had leapt, his blood was turned into red clay…and you can still see it today……. all along the ridges behind Kingscliff, Duranbah , Cudgen, Condong Range and running all the way back towards Kyogle through Eungella, Uki and Mebbin, and into the Tweed Range…and when warzum sends the  ‘buban’, the floods,  his blood can be seen in the Cudgenbil waterhole”…….

“But the place where Guruman was first hit with the spear that place has that name Googgin/Cudgen which is the name that Buluggahn’s  song gave the red clay soil stained forever from Guruman’s gumar…his blood”…  cudgen topo map   “But the goodgin that is found in the sacred birman [cave] is far redder than that found anywhere else…. and this is because that Guruman died in there” …

And Juluhnnggi, means that Guruman was a strong spirit…. So the WayunBuluggahn used that  magic song and made him into a djurebil, a sacred site, and at a certain time of the year we can see that Guruman spirit in the stars of Balun, Wayalthe Milkyway – its then we know when to hunt the Gurumanmir, the flock in accordance with proper lore” ….

“Bird Tribe warriors wear their ochre when we corroboree, ‘jangar ba’– that’s what we call our shake a leg dance…we hold ceremony to increase the Gurumanmir before we hunt…. then we paint a strip of that red ochre under our eyes, across the bridge of our nose just as the Buluggahn did when he speared that spirit Guruman at Cudgen Heads, Kingscliff. ” …..

… This illustrates how Boodharam gawari,  Lore,  links people to Land, through Language”

“Lore Land and Language are LINKED”

“That’s the creation lore my Grandfather taught me about Goodgin Guruman ”….

7 sisters - wollumbin caldera - labledThe Wiangarie, the Seven Sisters,  are significant creation beings for all of the Feathered Serpent Lore Traditions across Australia …..it the prehistoric lore of the explosion of water and life on a previously barren  primordial earth…..

“I want to share with you important creation lore – the Yoocum Yoocum Bootheram Lore about how aquatic and terrestrial life emerged on this planet way back in the Dreamtime…..this Bootheram  metaphorically narrates the creation of life in the waters and its emergence onto land…… and the strict rules of marriage from the heavens which ensures increase, and not extinction, of all species ”…..

“It is called a “Boodharam gawari”, which means story ‘run’, or Songline, with all of the associated djurebil, sacred sites, connected across the landscape, and in the sky”…..

Men and Women share the same sky when teaching Lore, and so the same creation spirits, or Sky Ancestors, appear again and again throughout the Bootheram’s….but all appear in the sky together and the stars can be read like a story board…making all Bootheram lore uncorruptible ”….emu dragonfly milkyway

“The Wiangarie, the Seven Sisters, are Sky Ancestors who travelled through the primordial landscape of the Alcheringa with their magic digging sticks ‘ganay’ to make the first fresh water springs in the terrestrial Dreamtime before ascending back to the heavens with their Grandmother, the Rainbow Serpent – Warrazum…… Way back when the earth was just beginning …in the Alcheringa”.

“The Wiangaree are ancient Water Lubra Spirits whose ongoing celestial dance creates our sacred Skinlore Kinship cycles…. The Wiangaree brought to the surface and from the heavens the gift of sacred water –  unifying ALL LIFE on this planet……every species….

It is the Women’s Water Lore which we still use today – which can be found all over the planet ……its tracked using a galactic pentagram , guarded by the two spirit dogs, Innernoogun and Burranjarnee, whose celestial bodies are hidden in plain sight around the constellation of Orion,  with their terrestrial bodies forming the landscape  of the Wollumbin Caldera Terra-henge – in the Ngarakbul ancestral estate….

BandjalangClan mapBul” is our word for Tree….we are Bird Tribes and each tribal Clan is responsible for a Totemic Tree…..Githa-bul, Ngarak-bul, Whaili-bul”

“The Seven Sisters “Boodharam gawari” begins way out in the sea [which was once Whailibul land] and is now known as Bandjalang Clan territory at Evans Head…

The Whailibul [Bandjalang] Clan are one of the marriage clans of the Ngarakbul and Githabul…. the “ Wiangaree Boodharam gawari” travels through the waters – up the ancient Clarence River to meet with the other marriage clans……

In the Mebbini [Eagle] forest below the Pinnacle, Coowarragum, of  the Wollumbin Caldera is the Coowaragum Skinlore Djurebil ….. below the creation djurebils [sacred sites] of Winagarie Forest now renamed the Border Ranges…Journeying through the Jurassic  forests of the Wollumbin Caldera, in the Rainbow Serpents Abode – the  Warrazumbil Wilderness.….   and west to align with the djurebil of the Githabul ancestral estate, of the Grandfather Spirit ”….

Charlotte Brown, my Great Grandmother inherited the custodianship of Yar Birrain – Mount Warning and the Ngarakbul Lore from her Grandfather King Brown of Wollumbin who the keeper of was the first Origine’ Lore of this continent – the Skinlore, Kinship and Starlore Bootheram’s of the Rainbow Serpent and Nguthungulli, our Father – God, who gifted us the ancient Origine’ Lore” ……..

Euston Williams – Githabul – Skinlore marriage – Charlotte Brown – Ngarakbul

“Our people didn’t come here, we were made here, by Nguthungulli – he is our creator…he made the first people out of the earth” …..

Charlotte was the daughter of Mary Brown, a full blooded Ngarakbul woman, who had seven children with King Brown ….four daughters and three sons ….all of them married proper tribal skinlore way, following the sacred starlore cycles, within triangles of each clans respective territorial boundaries”

“Muldoom was a fully initiated ‘marugun’- which means a Senior Lore Man, and he was from the Bandjalang Clan of Dirrawong – Evans Head … He married ‘Black Mary’ Brown, the eldest of the four ‘Brown’ daughters of the Ngarakbul clan”….

“Muldoom and Mary’s union was the last full tribal marriage to take place on Dirrawong – Goanna Headland”…..

“Ngarakbul, Githabul and Whailibul [Bandjalang] are one of the twelve clan marriage triangles of the eight skins of the Feathered Serpent traditions all with their own sacred ‘Bul”  Tree Totems”….

Stan Williams was my Grandfather, Charlotte Brown was his mother”….

“The Wiangaree Boodharam gawari governs all of our kinship skinlore and it comes directly from the Star Ancestors…..it is written in the sky and into our ancestral landscapes…it is very sacred to our people…..the stars align at certain time every year and ignite our djurebil here on the earths surface….refreshing the Bootheram…increasing life and ensuring survival”.

“All of our creation Bootheram is told in metaphor… Bootheram of the journeys and adventures of our Sky Ancestors are describing significant earth events…geological, hydrological, evolutionary, atmospheric, galactic events”…..

coowarragum starcycles with pentagrams“The Wollumbin Caldera is the ceremonial and ritual forum of the Skinlore Starlore cycles…. My people would come here to ritually celebrate since time immemorial at the Pinnacle Coowarragum Stone complex…..This sacred djurebil ‘record’s the galactic time cycles of our galaxy…..Time and space  govern all of our sacred marriage lore’s,  mythologised  by the Sky Ancestors,  Leho and Leva ….the handsome Bullughan and beautiful Ggawungan…..our ancestors created and gifted to us by our Father, in heaven, Nguthungulli …..GOD!

“All Starlore Bootheram Skinlore/Kinships commence on the east coast of Australia in the ancestral lands of the Bird Tribes……It starts here because the stars rise above the landscape from the east FIRST  …and travel HOME to the west …to the oldest terrestrial land on the planet…The West Kimberley – the first land to emerge from the primordial sea in the Alcheringa – 3,600million years ago”….

“The mighty Clarence River – Wayal, Balun which in our dialect means Milkyway, flows from the Great Artesian Basin – the ancient freshwater seas of the Rainbow Serpent creation….the Yoocum Yoocum frontier was once a vast area bound by the ancient River, and our creation Bootheram uses all the stars as the story board to tell of creation”…..

“Our Wiangaree Boodharam gawari, relates how seven beautiful spirit women descend to earth at Dirrawong, Goanna Headland in the ancestral lands of the Bandjalang Clan, and journey up into the headwaters of the primordial Clarence River into Ngarakbul and Githabul ancestral estates…. Wiangaree Boodharam gawari  is the lore of their journey as they dig the freshwater springs and seed the waters with life ”….

“After the cretaceous creation epoch, the Seven Sisters send the world to sleep,  wrapped in a blanket of ice and return to the to ‘Sky River’ to look down upon creation with the other Sky Ancestors …. Millennia passed and one day they looked down and saw life on earth awakening and blossoming…..They sort to return to earth to satisfy their curiosity”…..

“These girls were all very clever and they possessed ritual digging sticks, ‘ganay’……. inside their sticks they had secret charms….Elemental forces which they could use to protect themselves from their enemies”……..

“Each day on earth the Wiangaree went hunting…. seeking water snake and gathering yam’s in the bush, and they carried their yam sticks with them”…….

Koorumbyn“A Balogun, a TALL handsome young man of the Ngarkabul, named Kurrumbil, [Currum or Gurum -Bil ]  was following a flock of Gurumanmir, Grey Kangaroo accompanied by his two hunting dogs……

“As they hunted they encountered the group of beautiful women travelling together……. Kurrumbil thought them to be initiates engaged on their ritual quests into womanhood, so he dared not approach them….if the Wuyan, cleverman, Burrigan, knew he saw the girls, there would be trouble”…..

“But that night he dreamed of the women, and day after day he and his dogs followed them, watching from the cover of the forest…. and each day he felt his desire for the girls growing…. wanting them for his wives…….Kurrumbil knew it would be dangerous and difficult to catch one of these women…so he resolved to track them and wait for his chance”….

“All the next day he followed them….When they stopped to make camp Kurrumbil stepped out from the forest, and came  face to face with the two youngest sisters….He grasped them both around the waist and held them firmly…”I want to make you my wives”, he said …..the sisters protested loudly…..they warned Kurrumbil  that they were  his tribal sisters and therefore any association  would be punished severely under Lore”……

Koorumbyn Creek - mount warning - 1933 mapKurrumbil laughed at them…and carried them both off to his mountain camp at the base of a great pine tree….suddenly,  using the powers of their magical sticks,  the two sisters summoned the waters of the creek in the camp,   ‘Kurrumbyn’,  to rise up and  wash Kurrumbil down the mountain and out the mouth of the Ngarakbul River……They then left the mountain and travelled back to their sisters” ….“Kurrumbil however would not be deterred so easily….. he was obsessed with the beautiful young girls…He decided to pursue them with even more stealth”….

“One day, having again been hunting in the mountains with his dogs, he came upon the Wiangaree when the they had stopped to bathe in the cool waters of the river – Wayal-Balun…… the women had left their magical yam sticks leaning against a tree growing beside the river while they swam”….

“As  the Wiangaree laughed and played in the water Kurrumbil crept to the base of the tree and stole the magic digging sticks and hid them along the rivers  banks ……but he kept the ‘ganay’ of the youngest sister…She was the one he desired most”….

“When the Wiangaree returned from bathing they discovered the theft and began to search along the rivers banks…..It was late afternoon before they recovered them, but there was still only six of the ‘ganay’….

“It’s time to make camp” the eldest said, so leaving the youngest to search alone, the other sisters walked away”…

“Kurrumbil, watching from the forest, saw his chance…..He waited until she came close then crept behind her and captured the young girl…She of course did not have her yam stick with her so he was able to carry her off to his own camp at the base of the  great pine tree”…..

“The Wiangaree sisters were furious when they found their youngest sister was missing…..They knew it was Kurrumbil again, so they began to plan to rescue their Sister and to punish him for his crime”……

“The eldest sister wanted to send a fierce storm ’warimay’ of wind and rain to tear up the tree and crash branches down on Kurrumbil to kill him” …

The other Sisters were afraid that their youngest sister might also lose her life by the falling branches” …

“One of the eldest suggested they should go away to the west where they knew the winter lived and send back long nights of frost and freezing winds to punish Kurrumbil…… ’bagaywena’- to darken the earth and freeze him” ….

“It was agreed to journey far into the west…..they found the winter and sent back frost and exceptionally severe weather to the camp where Kurrumbil and the girl were living …so cold that Kurrumbil almost died”….

“The youngest sister whom he had captured did not feel the terrible cold because her older sisters had asked their Grandmother- Warrazum to secretly send her charmed yam stick to her…she summoned the element of fire and was magically protected….. Kurrumbil shivered and suffered severely and as the snow began to fall ‘bina’…..it wasn’t long before he became ill from the cold and  darkness and was glad to release the girl back to her sisters”……

“The Wiangaree then decided that they should not cause any more hardship to the earth by the severe cold, so they decided to travel far into the east in search of warmth and summer….At Winter solstice they appeared in  the east, traveling with the Whale Spirits ….and brought with them the warm rays of mother sun to melt the frost and ice”….

“They did not wish to harm the Bird Tribes further, they only wished to rescue their sister from Kurrumbil and punish him for breaking the Lore” …

“The Wiangaree then left the earth altogether and travelled back into the sky, where the constellation known as the Pleiades “Waringehn’ still represents their camp on the riverbank of Wayal-Balun”……

“After the departure of the Wiangaree, Kurumbil was lonely….He looked far and wide for another wife, this time determined to comply with the marriage rules of his people…… He found a young woman who belonged to the Kooran section, a beautiful young girl whom he wished to marry…….. Unfortunately, she was already married to a man named Bullabogabun, a great warrior” …..

“Again Kurrumbil broke Lore …..He succeeded in seducing the young wife and she agreed to run away with him”…..

Currumbin
Currumbin

“Kurrumbil and the young wife travelled along the coast to make a new camp away  from her husband…..they arrived at Kurrumbin – which mean’s Kurrum’s camp …a significant place on the Gold Coast now known as Currumbin in Ngarakbul country [ Ngar-ahn-g-bal]”………..

“When Bullabogabun discovered that his wife had eloped he followed in a great fury……arriving at the camp and then chasing the lovers through the landscape”…….

“In order to escape his pursuer, Kurrumbil returned to his Pine tree camp, and climbed up to hide amongst the topmost branches…… Bullabogabun was furious, so he gathered all the wood he could find and piled it into a heap at the base of the tree…… He set fire to the sticks and burnt the huge pine tree to cinders” …

“As the flames reached high into the air, Kurrumbil was carried with them far into the sky, where he remains today near the Wiangaree as the star Aldebaran, and he now follows the Wiangaree sisters eternally, just as he did in his youth”……

“Every year the Wiangaree reappear…rising from the east in the ocean off Ngarakbul ancestral estate – always on winter solstice–  always travelling with the whale spirits ‘wardham’….. together they bring with them the skinlore and of promise of pleasant warm weather returning to those who uphold the lore….

After which they gradually disappear towards the west…… This reminds us they are preparing to send the cold and winter to warn the Tribes men not to carry off a woman of the wrong kin, but to always choose proper wives as the Skinlore says they should”….

Like the Yoocum Yoocum , the Mirning Moiety of the Nullabor in South Australia, and the Arunda of Uluru are ancient moieties who observe the same Rainbow Serpent and Seven Sisters Skinlore kinships, and the same Starlore …and the same Whale Dreaming … This illustrates how Boodharam gawari links people to country, and metaphorically relates complex scientific evolutionary processes…this wealth of living cultural knowledge survived invasion and was maintained through proper Skinlore Marriage given to us by our Sky Ancestors…because we followed the natural lore our ancestral ties remain unbroken right across Australia”

“That’s the creation Lore my Great Grandmother taught the Ngarakbul and Githabul women about the Wiangaree Boodjeram gawari”………Allan Euston Williams

The Sacred Spring – Birth of a Continent in Aboriginal Lore.

Lake Carpentaria is a significant creation site for all of the Feathered Serpent Lore Traditions …..it is the prehistorical lore of how Australia became an Island.

“I want to share with you important creation lore – the Ngarakbul Githabul Bootheram Lore about how this continent Australia became an island way back in the Dreamtime…..this Bootheram  metaphorically narrates the sinking of the geological land bridge that once linked our big island to Old World India,  way back in the dreamtime”…..

It is called  a “Boodharam gawari”, which means story ‘run’, or Songline, with all of the associated djurebil, sacred sites, connected across the landscape, and in the sky”…..

“Way back, long before modern history records, the old world kingdom of prehistoric India was under attack by ancient northern invaders…..The invaders came down from the headwaters of the Indus –  in the Tibetan Plateau…..The Bootheram describes it as  a ‘war in the centre of the earth’…….people were fleeing for their lives because of geological upheaval and genocide of tribal groups was occuring ”….

“The Bootheram sings about the people the old Bird Tribes had to fight in that prehistoric war…they say that they wore  a kind of turban thing on their heads which would  slip off and you’d see their long hair fall down backwards….Like all our creation lore , it’s  very ancient”……Invasion route - labelled

“More than 70,000 years ago, or even older, the first wave of iceage migration came travelling out of Africa…..then it was over 40,000 years before they began the journey down the land bridge  toward the ancestral estates of the Bird Tribes”……

“My old people always knew, since the Alcheringa, which is our word for the beginning, that this land was once one whole island from here to Asia.… The Feathered Serpent Moieties  didn’t come to this land, we were made here, by Nguthungulli. God…we have always been here”……..

“It was a very turbulent world in ancient days , which is why the Bootheram records it …the Bird Tribes sent their cleverest ones, who were magic – to defend them….the Wuyan – and travelling with them was the highest of all – Buluggahn ….They journeyed  up the old-world land bridge to fight…. and  successfully defended Australia from foreign invasion – way back then” ……

Stan Williams was my Grandfather, his mother was Charlotte Brown from the Ngarakbul estate, of the Tweed Volcano – Charlotte was the daughter of Mary Brown, a full blooded Ngarakbul woman, who had seven children ….four daughters and three sons ….all of them married proper tribal skinlore way, following the sacred starlore cycles, within triangles of each clans respective territorial boundaries“…

Stan Williams - Duroom - age 34 - Woodenbong - Tindale“Muldoom was a fully initiated ‘marugun’- which means a Senior Lore Man, and he was from the Bandjalang Clan of Dirrawong – Evans Head … He married ‘Black Mary’ Brown, the eldest of the four ‘Brown’ daughters of the Ngarakbul clan”….

“Muldoom and Mary’s union was the last full tribal marriage to take place on Dirrawong – Goanna Headland”…..

“Ngarakbul, Githabul and Bandjalang are one of the twelve clan marriage triangles of the eight skins of the Feathered Serpent traditions”…..

“The following is a Bootheram Muldoom gave my Grandfather Stan Williams to protect and teach…. this same Bootheram gawari [story run] has been faithfully passed down in my family since the beginning of the dreamtime…… It links our people together throughout time ”……

It is called ‘Boodjeram Mugul...it means Sacred Spring”…..

“ In the beginning of the world, the Alcheringa,  there were three spirit beings…

“There was Nguthungulli, Bulugahn and Gawunggan”…..

Nguthungulli is what we call God of the whole world…he is eternal and omnipotent ”…..

Leho - teacher of the LoreBulugahn means a handsome male spirit being;  and Gawunggan means a beautiful female spirit being”……

“Buluggahn [pronounced Bu-loo-gun ] was the most handsome man in the whole world”…..

Gawunggan [Ga-oon-gan or Guangun] was the most beautiful woman in the whole world”…

“They are our ancestors, like your Adam and Eve……We also call them Leho and Leva and we can see them appearing together in the stars of the milky way at specific times of the year…. They are the origin of our sacred marriage Skinlore given to us by Nguthungulli – their Father, who is also in the stars of the milkyway- ‘Balun, Wayal’”…

“Buluggahn resides in the heavens, but he is coming back some day……He is Burram Yanbuhyn – a teacher of the lore – and he is above all the tribal wuyhans, the cleverfellers …He is one of our greatest sky ancestors….He and his companions travel,  creating,  and have many adventure quests which form our traditional lore’s and customs”…..

“There was a sacred spring – Boodjeram Mugul is how we say that ….It is now known as the Gulf of Carpentaria in Queensland and the geologists call it the Lake of Carpentaria…..It belonged to Nguthungulli– he created the land with the Rainbow Serpent, and the Seven Sisters bringing the waters….This Lake is very sacred  and no one was ever allowed to go near it – it used to be Fresh water”….

“That same fresh water still flows under this continent in a vast underground basin, connecting  into the headwaters of the rivers flowing from Githabul ancestral estate….flowing all the way from the central continents…from the old glaciers of the Indus”…..

“Way back in the Alcheringa this land was one whole land from here to India…..then  there was great upheaval upon earth…..earthquakes, floods, glaciers melting, land movement…..  and there was a great war -the old world was under attack….it was being invaded from the northern tribes who had grown strong and forgotten the lore”….

“There was a Buyuhyn a man who had two wives- Budharbalahgan……. He wanted to go with the other Bird men to fight the invaders….. But he didn’t want his wives to follow him to India…so he took his war-club and beat his wives, almost to death…He did that so they wouldn’t follow him……  Then he went with the other men to ganar– war”…..

“When the men were gone, those two women started talking…We will go to the sacred spring”, they said”…..

Boodjeram Mugul - milkywayThose two women broke the lore and went to Nguthungulli’s spring, and they took their magic yam digging sticks with them……  From the spring, one went digging this way and one went digging that way…”Barwur bulahnggi – Let’s  keep digging till we meet together”, they said”….

“As they dug the water from the spring followed them….creating a big island…… Where they met, way down south, one water goes this way and the other water goes the other way…it is the roughest water in the world”…..

“When the war had finished the men tried to return home….but the bridge was gone and in its place was an ocean of water”

“Nguthungulli’s son, the Buluggahn, was with them…….  He began to sing … It was a magic song that made islands and mountains rise out of the water…Then using their burbi bugur, which is a magic string that they pull out of their mouths, the Wuyan -clever-fellers threw the magic string far across the water…making an invisible bridge so they could not be followed , they crossed over it from island to island, until they landed back in Australia”…..

“When the spirit men got back, they knew what had happened…and they blamed Buyuhyn for beating up his two wives…….so they punished him for breaking lore….he was banished to become an island off the northern coast of Carpentaria”….

“Then the men went looking for the two women, Budharbalahgan……they found them talking together way down in the ancient country of the Great Australian Bight …….and they punished them there for breaking the lore like their husband…… the Wuyan’s, turned those women into stone and banished them for eternity as well” …

“Those stones are part of Australian waters to this day…..two more famous islands”

“Afterwards the Wuyan returned to the east coast…… they never went back fighting anymore……  The Bird Tribes lost touch with the outside world and it was a very long time before another wave came……. This all happened way back in the Alcheringa”…….

Girraween, the Bird Tribes and Climate Change in ancient lore

Giraween - sphinx

The purpose of maintaining ancient lore and culture intact ensures survival in times of great challenge…..to change ancestral lore can cause extinction.

GiraweenBoonoo Boonoo  is one of our ancestral meeting places where all the old tribal clans of the northern Yoocum Yoocum would gather for trade, ceremony, initiation, corroboree and marriages…it’s on the way up to Bonyi Bonyi the Bunya Mountains  where they would attend the triannual Bunya Nut and Moth harvest in the ancestral estate of the Wakka Wakka moiety……Kambuwal, Jukambal, Ngarakbul, Githabul, Kwiambal…..all the bird tribes would attend,  traveling on the ancient songlines ”….

“I would like to share with a very very old Bootheram will tells of the creation from a time when the 5 coastal volcanoes were geologically linked together to form a much larger volcano which for the Yoocum Yoocum is a prehistoric mountain belonging to our creator Nguthungulli – our Father – God”……..5 volcanos

“There is a creek up on the Maleny Volcano Plateau which still bears the name of Nguthungulli’s sacred mountain – Oobi Oobi creek which meanders across the mesa and through the mountain villages … it is connected to the main headwaters – through aquifers which still unify the 5 volcanoes”…..

Githabul country is the headwaters of the major east coast rivers….and just out of the village of Woodenbong , there is a sacred waterhole – the Githabul playfully call it the rabbit-hole, but it is the junction of major tributaries and underground aquifers which shoot water into the volcanoes like a pump ……its sacred to the women’s Rainbow Serpent water lore and far to sacred to swim in”….

“All our Bootheram lore is written across the vault of the Milkyway and can be read like a book by the initiated…this way it can never be changed…as no-one can change the stars”….

‘Giraween’ is our name for the White Sulphur Crested Cockatoo ….a very important bird to our Creation Lore and the kinship Skinlore of the moieties  which unites us.. we are the bird tribes of Australia and we come from the eye of the Emu”….emu dragonfly milkyway

The first bird, who flew from the Bunya Mountains, from the Wakka Wakka ancestral estate was a white cockatoo named Kirra …the flight he took goes all the way down four volcanos to Coolangatta….there is a mountain lookout, right on the beach there called Kirra…..that cockatoo is a very old bird”…..

“This ancient knowledge of the geological creation further illustrates just how old our people are …and just how much they know…….. not only about the creation of the landscape…..but also about  significant earth events which trigger climatic changes……and about the  indelible link of natural lore to time and space –  to the stars…..and to water…….one of our word for the Milkyway is Balun which is also our word for river ….’Balun’, river in the sky…..our other word for the Milkyway is ‘Wayal’..”…..

“All our Bootheram lore is written across the vault of the Milkyway and can be read like a book by the initiated…this way it can never be changed…as no-one can change the stars”….

“My great great grandmother Lena Wheatley was from Girraween and she married Hughie Williams ……They had twelve children, six boys and six girls – My great grandfather Euston Williams was one of the twelve …..Girraween marrying Githabul is a proper tribal skinlore marriage….in accordance with our Starlore cycles”…..map_park_location

Stan Williams was my Grandfather and Euston Williams , is his father……the Elders taught Stan this important Bootheram Lore for the preservation of the custodial knowledge of our Origine’ people ….it is a story about the resurrection of the ancient lore at a time of upheaval.

“I would like to share my Great Great Grandmothers Giraween Bootheram with you…..it is a very very old Bootheram…… a Bird Tribe Bootheram called Budharbihyn Boodjeram …..or the Bootheram of the Flowers”….

“ After Nguthungulli, the god of creation, had left the earth and gone to his sacred crystal mountainOobi Oobi, the flowerswhich we call ’budharbihyn’, all withered and died…… nothing grew in their place………. The earth was bare and desolate and soon the ’budharbihyn’   became merely a legend which the old people passed on to the young ones”…….Giraween national park

“When the flowers, the ’budharbihyn’, went, so too did the bees – ‘juluhngay’….a great sadness filled the earth…..dark  clouds gathered and it began to rain and rain and rain”

“The women would take out their bark dishes to fill with honey, but they always returned with them empty…. there were bees still living and working on earth but only in the three sacred trees which Nguthungulli had claimed as his own, and the people did not dare go near these”………

“Those three sacred trees held up the sky way back in the dreamtime when the bird tribes had only just begun…great change had blocked out the sun and no blue sky could be seen, only cloud….. held up by the soaring branches of those three ancient tree’s…….now all that’s left of them is their stumps , and those metaphorical ‘stumps’ are three very sacred mountains for the bird tribes ”…..

“The ‘jarjum’, the children, cried about those trees, because they wanted the last honey, ‘gudhe’ left on earth, and the mothers were upset because they could not give it to them, for the old clever men of the tribe, the Wuyan, would not let them touch Nguthungulli’s three sacred trees”.Giraween - granite arch

Nguthungulli, the spirit who saw everything listened how the people longed for honey, flowers and the colours of the sunshine, yet would not touch his trees, and Nguthungulli was pleased…….  He decided to reward the people and gift them a food as sweet as honey which they would love……soon white sugary specks appeared on the gum leaves and sweet juice began running down the tree trunks and hardening into lumps which the children could gather”…….

“The people were happier and their craving for sweet food was satisfied…….  But the wise old Wuyan were far from satisfied…….  They longed to see the flowers growing again, and to feel the warmth of the sun,  and so determined were they, that without telling the people of their tribes where they were going, they set out on a spiritual quest ‘ngudhal-gali’ to find Nguthungulli so they could ‘ngalawa’ which means seek him to ask  that Nguthungulli restore and seed the earth with the beautiful colours and sweetness of flowers once more” ………

“The Wuyan journeyed east until they came to the foot of the sacred Oobi Oobi mountain, towering so far above them that it’s top was lost in the dark clouds…..Oobi Oobi is Nguthungulli’s sacred crystal mountain from the Dreamtime”…..

jalgumboonj2“At first the sides seemed too steep to climb but eventually they found a foothold ‘wayal’ …this word Wayal has two meanings, one is foothold and the other is Milkyway”……

So those Wuyan found a wayal,  then another and another until, looking up, they saw it was a path cut into the side of the mountain reaching as far as they could see….Up and up and up they went, climbing one day, two days, three days, through the dark cloud until at last on the fourth day, they reached the top, completely exhausted”.

“They looked around them and saw a spring of water from which they drank eagerly…at once their weariness left them……….  Suddenly they heard Coowarragum , a bull-roarer, the voice of the great  spirit, asking them why they had come”……

“They sang to the spirit ‘jingan’, a sacred song of sadness, of how barren the earth had become since Nguthungulli had left…….how the flowers had all died and had not bloomed again, and although they had the sweet tree juice in place of honey, they longed for the flowers to make the earth bright once more and they longed for the warmth of mother sun to rise every morning and light the world”…….Girraween - sunrise alignment

“Nguthungulli was pleased with the song …..the wise old men, Wuyan, were lifted up through an opening in the clouds and set down beside Balun, the great river in the sky….flowing through a land of exquisite beauty with star burst flowers blooming everywhere, massed together in brilliant colours like hundreds of rainbow’s laid out on the desert plains………  The Wuyan were so overcome that they wept for joy. But they soon remembered why they were there and they gathered as many of the lovely blooms as their arms could hold……  When they were finished, the great spirit lifted them gently and flew them back downthrough the clouds  to earth onto the top of the sacred mountain Oobi Oobi”……last nights galactic core over Wollumbin - by Rod Evans

“Again they heard the spirit’s  voice saying, “Tell your people that the earth shall never be without flowers again……  Different winds, ‘burgiyn’will bring the flowers in every season and the east wind will bring them in profusion…… and there will be blossoms on every tree and shrub”.

“The Wuyan took the flowers that they had gathered and began to descend down the wayal – stone footholds-  then journeyed across the plains,  and over the stony ridges to the camps of the feathered serpents …the bird tribes, with their arms full of the precious flowers”…….

“The people flocked around them, overwhelmed at the spectacle of the Budharbihyn, flowers, and how they filled the air with their beautiful perfume……  When the Clevermenshared the promise made by Nguthungulli the bird tribes were so grateful that they each took some of the Budharbihyn and scattered the flowers seeds far and wide, over the tree-tops, over the plains and ridges and wherever they fell, they have grown ever since”.flowers3

“The place where they first scattered the flowers is called Girraween, which means place of the flowers……on the NSW Qld Border back of Main Range Volcano…My great great Grandmother Lena Wheatley’s ancestral country” ……

flowers1“And thereafter trees and shrubs blossomed thickly again,  and in time the earth recovered ….The bird tribes lifted the clouds……‘Yelgun’, mother sun sailed across the blue skies once more and the earth was restored with abundant cool grasses and healing flowers as when Nguthungulli, our Father , the god of creation, had first walked upon it in the alcheringa”……..

“That’s the Lore my Grandfather Stan Williams taught me “……

Aboriginal Creation Lore of the Gold Coast & Northern Rivers Basalt Headlands

All creation Bootheram is told in metaphor… Bootheram of the journeys and adventures of the Sky Ancestors describing significant geological events…

“I want to share with a Bootheram about the creation of the Gold Coast & Northern Rivers Headlands…..its a Bootheram about honey and the echidna”…

“In Ngarakbul Githabul we call the Echidna, Booninj, the Porcupine….

“When Nguthungulli first sent his son Yar-Birrain to earth, the earth was very new….Yar-Birrain arrived  into the paradise that Nguthungulli had created in the east ”..

Yar - Birrain satelite“Yar Birrain is our name for Mount Warning.  Once a huge shield volcano covering eruptions smothered the surrounding landscape with layers of basalt lava flows about 25million years ago……… By the time the eruptions had ceased, Yar-Birrain had risen from the seafloor to a height of 2km and a diameter of about 100km, forming a vast dome stretching south to Lismore, west to Mount Lindsay and north to Tamborine Mountain…. Tamborine is the closest the colonial settlers could get to saying Yar-Birrain”….

“My Great Grandfather, Euston William’s was a Githabul man, and he married Charlotte Brown…..Charlotte is my Ngarakbul Great Grandmother  from the Tweed Volcano where Yar Birrain is the centrepiece of the Ngarakbul ancestral estate

“Euston and Charlotte had nineteen children …Their eldest Son was Stan Williams and Stan is my Grandfather…… His tribal name was Duroom which means “Custodian of Knowledge and Lore” ……

king brown logo 2“Charlotte Brown inherited the custodianship of Yar Birrain Lore from her Grandfather King Brown of Wollumbin who was the keeper of the first Origine’ Lore of this continent – the Skinlore, Kinship and Starlore Bootheram’s of the Rainbow Serpent and Nguthungulli, our Father – God, who gave us the ancient Origine’ Lore”…….. our people didn’t come here , we were made here, by Nguthungulli – he is our creator” …..

“Stan was my Grandfather and Charlotte, his mother, taught him this important Ngarakbul Bootheram Lore for the preservation of the custodial knowledge of our Origine’ people……… The same lore has been faithfully passed down in my family since the beginning of the dreamtime …This is how my grandparents taught us to protect our Bootheram Lore

“All of our creation Bootheram is told in metaphor… Bootheram of the journeys and adventures of our Sky Ancestors are describing significant geological events, often using our native species as descriptive’s” …..

“The full Bootheram Lore telling of Yar-Birrain’s eruptions occur across the three volcanoes of Tweed Volcano, Focal Peak Volcano, and the Maleny Volcanothe Glasshouse Mountains, on the Sunshine Coast.. those three volcanoes began at the same time”……

oobi oobi 5 volcanos

“Main Range Volcano and the Bunya Volcano are older, from the time of Barambah, the Grandfathers….All five volcanoes Bootheram’s are sung together – All linked by the Rainbow Serpent Creation Lore”….

“The creation of the New South Wales and Queensland Border by the Commonwealth severed the ancestral lore most effectively…….. The Rainbow Serpent Traditions, Lore’s and Customs were forced underground to survive.  They are still being ignored by the authorities today…which is a great shame”……

“I’m just going to teach you the Bootheram which tells about the Gold Coast and Tweed Byron region of the Ngarakbul – My Great Grandmothers Country” ….

“The old people say that when Yar-Birrain arrived in his Father’s paradise, he was drawn irresistibly to the sparkling surf…. He dropped his weapon’s on the beach and plunged into the primordial waters, swimming out to the horizon and back……that’s a metaphor explaining that the original Shield Volcano used to extend far out into the sea”…

“When Yar-Birrain arrived back on the beach he picked up his huge war club or Waddy….. the ground still clung to it…….suddenly the lava rose from the sea… rising up, following the waddy like iron follows a magnet”…..mt Tamborine2

“This is how the earliest rocky outcrops and islands of the Queensland Gold Coast and Northern Rivers Coast lines were created….the Waddy of Yar-Birrain”……

“After this period of creation work, Yar- Birrain became very hungry……So he rose up and began to  journey west, travelling deep into the prehistoric  forest to find food”…

“He came to a gigantic tree, Djalgumboonj – Mount Lindsay…that mountain was once a tree made by Nguthungulli way back in the Dreamtime”…..oreillys-view-to-Mt lindsey

“Yar-Birrain cut a vine to use as a rope to climb that tree…and as he climbed he cut footholds with his axe…up and up he climbed to cut a ‘sugar bag’ or bees nest from high in the trunk”….

“Sugar Bag Honey is made by the djagabar the little black native bee… In the dreamtime the Githabul Bird Tribes would make camp near the base of Mount Barney, which we call Budhurguhmu…………. Budhurguhmu is next to Djalgumboonj,  on the Queensland side of the McPherson Range,   The Githabul would go to collect that same honey at Budhurguhmu…and there is a djurebil [sacred site] for the increase of Booninj– echidna, there also” ….

“After descending the sacred tree, Yar-Birrain gorged himself with honey, gudhe, and then he turned back to the beach and sat at the water’s edge to wash off the sticky nectar”…

“As he washed his hands bits of honeycomb floated away, first creating the little headland of Burleigh, called Djellurgal (bee’s nest)….but  some of that honeycomb floated out to sea and formed islands,  which are now undersea mountains..But way back in the Dreamtime they were islands, like Cook Island off Booninjba, Fingal…others can still be seen allong the coast , like Boggangaree Headland at Cudgen, and  Ballina and Lennox”….windarra banks

“Yar-Birrain was still hungry, so he stood and stretched up to his full height…. pushing his arms toward the sky he sang a prayer of thanks and praise to Nguthungulli, his father, for creating such a land of paradise, and he asked him to make it even more abundant….. to send more good food to eat”….

“Such was Nguthungulli, God’s, power, that the level ground again rose up, stopping when it reached the height of Yar-Birrain’s fingertips…..the headlands had appeared and they were echidna Booninj..burrowing into the sand”…..Big Burleigh -

“All along the coastline the Booninj arose…. Booninjba [Fingal Headland], Cooloon Booninj– [Point Danger]…and Pooningba [Big Burleigh], Bogangaree, Byron, Lennox…from Honey Comb and Echidna, all came into creation”…..

That’s the Lore my Grandfather and Great Grandmother Charlotte taught me…it is our most sacred Bootheram – it is the lore of the creation of our sacred land  “……

Burrigan -Springbrook National Park, Natural Bridge and Toonumbar National Park

Burrigan -Springbrook National Park, Natural Bridge and Toonumbar National Park are connected sacred sites – from the Rainbow Serpent Creation Lore

“I want to share with you a sacred creation Lore from the Dreamtime ….we call our lore Bootheram……. This Bootheram involves a ‘complex’ of connected Djurebil, sacred sites of lore,  located high on the Mesa’s of the Wollumbin Caldera- The Springbrook National Park and  the  Lamington National Park of the McPherson Ranges in Queensland  and then on the New South Wales  side of the border, in the Border Ranges which the Ngarakbul and Githabul call Wiangaree, and on up into Focal Peak Volcano –  Toonumbar National Park in Githabul Country ”……

“The whole of the Wollumbin Caldera rim has many significant Feathered Serpent Starlore, Marriage Lore, Creation Lore and Increase and initiation ritual sites, which we call ‘Djurebil’ …….the sites associated with Warrazum , the Rainbow Serpent are our most sacred…but they don’t just stop at Wollumbin……..like the waters,  they travel through the landscape….. Our Lore, Land and Language are linked “……

“Scattered throughout the landscape, aligned to star cycles, our most sacred Bootheram’s span either side of the commonwealth created border……Half in New South Wales and the other half in Queensland…This was a very deliberate action by colonial authorities to eradicate evidence of prior occupation.  Targeting our most powerful djurebil Bootheram sites…. attempting to sever the head of the Rainbow Serpent…..and so, like the Rainbow Serpent of the Dreamtime,  our lore went ‘underground,  to survive…but now it is time to bring this beautiful truth out of the darkness and back  into the light where it belongs “….

Stan Williams - Duroom - age 34 - Woodenbong - Tindale“Stan Williams was my Grandfather and Charlotte Brown, his mother, taught him all the Ngarakbul Feathered Serpent Bootheram Lore for the preservation of the custodial knowledge of our Origine’ people, after British occupation …… The same lore has been faithfully passed down in my family since the beginning of the dreamtime …This is how my grandparents taught us to protect our lore”….

“I want to share with you a Ngarakbul Githabul Bootheram about Natural Bridge in the Springbrook National Park …..it is the home of the Kalibal or Gullival tribe  of the Ngarakbul moiety…a Eel djurebil increase site is there…. and this place is spiritually, geologically and ritually connected to Banyara, also known as Dome Mountain in Toonumbar National Park in Kitabal or Githabul Country –  Githabul are one of the marriage clan’s of Ngarakbul…from the  Yoocum Yoocum ”…

Dome Mountain- toonumbar national park

“Banyara is one of the most significant spiritual sites of the Githabul and an intrinsic facet of our Bootheram Creation Lore”… this djurebil is sacred to our people for the purpose of manipulating the rain…..and it is one of the sites associated with the Rainbow Serpent, Warrazum.

My people go to Banyara  to the djurebil and talk to the Warrzum and rain comes and floods all the creeks and valleys….fertilising the land……

“The Warrazum is a protector for my people….it will often make a noise like thunder in the mountains and if any of our people are sick this noise is heard…..The Warrazum is friendly to our people, but dangerous to strangers”….

“Grandmother Rainbow Serpent, Warrzum, and the Seven Sisters, Wiangarie , create the primordial waters long before Nguthungulli created the people…. Way back in  the alcheringa, the beginning , there was no plants or animals…the earth was still new”….

“Warrzum and Wiangaree came in to the ancient country through the waters….way back in the dreamtime the  landscape was  very different to the one we have today ……the volcanos had only just been sung from the sea, Burraga”….

“The Warrzum and the Wiangaree, , travelled into the primordial landscape– Warrzum carved the underground caverns… creating underground rivers under the volcanos….cooling the ancient landscape, all the way to the headwaters in Githabul country……and the Wiangaree used their magic digging sticks to release the springs of water throughout the prehistoric lands”…

“Githabul Country is where our coastal rivers connect with the ancient artesian basin – under our continent, Australia….and our Women’s Water Lore teaches us how through the waters all life is connected” …..

“This is a Bootheram my Grandfather Stan Williams told me of Springbrook National Park and what it means to the Ngarakbul and Githabul moiety….”….

Burrigan - jesus - labelled

“Burrigan is the name we call Springbrook Mountain ….you look at that mountain , perfectly balanced…abundant with creeks, waterfalls, and caves….It is a very  sacred place of the Sky Ancestors”…

“Burrigan is our Jesus…. one of the son’s of Nguthungulli, our Father..Burrigan is a Burram Yanbuhyn-  a teacher of the lore ”….

“In the days of the Dreaming, a very long time long after Warrazum and the Wiangaree had come to create the waters….and a very long time after Nguthungulli had first seeded the land, the land was abundant and life on earth flourished  …

“And in time Nguthungulli made the first bird tribes – the first Origine’  people”…

“Way back in the dreaming there was a war…the first war….the bird tribes went to war with the snake tribes …. and so Nguthungulli sent his son , Burrigan,  to earth to teach us his Fathers lore”…..

Burrigan - spring Brook - labelled

“Burrigan made his first camp on the bank of a creek… In the Dreamtime the coast went out miles further to the east….right out into the ocean…….so in the dreamtime, Buirrigan’s  camp was out where the sea is now,  way out from Currumbin, on the southern gold coast”…

“One day Burrigan went into the water to bathe…….A large Wardham – water serpent, some say it was the ancestor of the Eel’s ……Well that Warrazum, rose to the surface and swallowed Burrigan, and for many days he remained inside the body of  the Warrazum…..and that Warrazum began to travel underground…..through the waters….eroding the  mountains of the volcano”…

“After three days that Rainbow Serpent came to its sacred cave, which was inside a newly forming Springbrook Mountain….it entered the cave and lay down to sleep…and at once Burrigan made his escape”….

The Warrazum awoke and began to fight with Burrigan – and the cave began to collapse…water rushed down the mountain….Burrigan and Warrazum continue fight ing on through the landscape carving the Numinbah Valley …creating  the Nerang River, which is sacred to the Ngarakbul ”….

Springbrook - glow worms - natual bridge ...Burrigan - labelled“Burrigan returned to the cave in the mountain, to become the spirit of the cave – and there he lives to this very day……inside his sacred mountain here on earth ….At night Burrigan sings to the spirit of his Sky Ancestors who sent him down to earth…, and they light his cave…..just as the Stars Ancestors light the heavens every evening”….

“And every time our people look at that Springbrook Mountain we remember our Father and the lore he gave us….and we remember Burrigan and his heroic deeds from our Dreamtime Bootheram ….the natural lore of the Sky Ancestors”….

“This ancient Lore links our people to country, governs our ritual and ceremonial traditions, and through proper Skinlore Marriage given to us by our Sky Ancestors, our ancestral ties remain unbroken since the alcheringa – ‘the beginning”……

“That’s the Lore my Grandfather taught me “……

Fingal, Point Danger, Mount Warning & McPherson Range – Initiation Songline

Julgumboonj from the McPherson ranges - O ReilysFingal Headland, Point Danger,   Mount Warning and the McPherson Range are a matrix of  significant Origine’ sites which together form a sacred Initiation Songline for the Bird Tribes of Eastern Australia…..

“I want to share with you an important Ngarakbul Githabul creation Lore about our Sky Ancestors, Burrajahnee and Inneroogun…Two sacred dogs …. This is a “Boodharam gawari”, which means story ‘run’, or Songline, with all of the associated djurebil, sacred sites, connected across the landscape, and in the sky”…..

“It is an Initiation Songline which follows annual star paths …and those two dogs can be seen in the sky at special  times each  year, so our people know when the initiations are to begin”…. “It instructs initiates into Ancestor Lore about hunting rights, access and skinlore relationships….The Ngarakbul spirit being ‘Wollumbin’, a feathered serpent totemic being – is spirit man – a wild turkey who lives inside the volcano caldera with his nephew ‘Burrigan’ since the Dreamtime.

“A tribal Grandfather/Uncle is very significant in Skinlore riBora ceremonytes, and so is the kinship Skinlore of nephew/initiate…..This  Bootheram teaches the initiate about the crime of  Greed when Wollumbin is robbed, and the  perpetrators punished”….

“Theft is a very serious crime in any global culture….For our people the landscape and the sky are the story board that teaches us this first lore and all our ancestral lore….Our Lore never needed to be written down…It was given to us by Nguthungulli –God – and it never changes, because no man or corporation or government can change the stars”….

“The whole of the Wollumbin Caldera has many significant Starlore, Marriage Lore, Creation Lore, Increase and Initiation ritual sites, which we call ‘Djurebil’ that tell our creation stories…every time we look at or walk in those ancient mountains, and every time we gaze at the stars we are reminded of our ancestors and of the sacred lore obligations they gave us”….

“Way back when Nguthungulli descended to earth and  made the first Bird Tribes, he made Wollumbin, the Headman of Ngarakbul, and Wollumbin owned two dogs…. one male and one female…… each dog has djurebil at Mount Warning, and Fingal Head…. and their bodies create many significant peaks all along the McPherson Range……. running up from ‘Coolhoon’, which is one of our words for the Blue Fig or Quandong tree growth cycle…….Coolhoon is also what the Ngarakbul call Point Danger at Tweed Heads”….Cooloon - 1894 map ...murrabah mounds of stones

“The river and headlands were very different before occupation….There was no state border and there used to be caves and many basalt crystal rock formations the same as at Puningbah, Fingal…… These giant crystals ran from Coolhoon [Point Danger] all the way down  along the stretch of  coast called  Byron Bay and all were called Puning, which means echidna, because ….From Currumbin to Coorumbah, Cape Byron”….

“There was a sacred basalt island in the entrance of the Tweed River as well…sacred to the black dog spirit…. But all those crystals were blown up to build the break-walls and the railways,  and our old people were forced to relocate from the Aboriginal Reserve which was also in the river entrance….it’s gone now too..reclaimed as a part of Greenbank Island”.

“The authorities were clever – they put a border right at the djurebil site of the star initiation rites….They made the New South Wales and Queensland Border and severed the ancestral lore most effectively…….. The Rainbow Serpent Traditions, Lore’s and Customs were slated for genocide and to survive became forced underground….and  still being ignored by the authorities today…which is a great shame for our endangered culture and the endangered species it honours”……

Fingal causeway and Turtle island
Fingal causeway and Turtle island

Burrajahnee and Inneroogun, those two spirit dog, chased a kangaroo along the big bay…… Then they chased him over the volcano to Boonah, near Beaudesert, in Queensland”…..

“Those dogs kept chasing that kangaroo and eventually came to water and then lay on the bank….. While they slept two young girls from a nearby camp came, saw the dogs, and went off to bring more people down to the river…. After spearing the two dogs, they put them on a pole and began cooking them over a fire….. fire in Ngarakbal Githabul is Weybra ”…….

“Wollumbin, the Turkey Spirit, had followed his dogs and knew they had been killed……. He flew down onto the Boonah flat where his dogs were being cooked and he was so furious that he caused a wild storm to come and punish the people…Killing the whole tribe”…

“Wollumbin then took the  corpses of his dogs off the fire, wrapped them in bark, and as he flew across the country, parts of the dogs’ bodies dropped onto the ground below and formed djurebil in the the landscape….the male dog creating the rim of the volcano which is now known as the McPherson Ranges- Springbrook & Lamington National Parks…and the female creating the smaller ranges of Terranora, Tumbulgum and Kynumboon on back towards Yar-Birrain, Mount Warning”……

“My Great Grandfather, Euston Williams, was the chainman for Phinney MacPherson who surveyed and named the rugged McPherson Ranges of the New South Wales Queensland Border with the Roberts survey team and worked with Edwin Johnson who surveyed Coolhoon …… Lore, Land and Language are linked, so the surveyors used Ngarakbal Githabal language on the original maps”…..

Coolhoon - 1913 - Aboriginal ReserveHenry Brown was one of the first white men at Coolhoon – Tweed Heads – and Brown manned the first Pilot Station at the head of the river…his British name was given to some of our old tribal people…but before the white man came we all had skin names given to us by our creation ancestors…and we are related through kinship traditions from that same time”…..

“In the beginning time Warazum the Rainbow Serpent and Wiangarie the Seven Sisters created and seeded the landscape in readiness for Nguthungulli, our Father, to create the people  and teach us the lore…..Nguthungulli made all the animals, including the Bird Tribes and then gave us our feathered serpent traditions lore’s and customs…..Our totemic tribal names. Our Skinlore”…..

”Every evening our Sky Ancestors travel across the heavens, just as they have done since the alcheringa – the beginning……… Alcheringa is also the name of our sacred waterfall high in the Lamington National Park….a fountainhead of spiritual knowledge….  it  is where Wollumbin placed those two sacred dogs last remains  before he took their spirits back into the sky”…

“Tribes would travel from all over the ancestral estates to attend star ceremonies at the Coowarragum Lore Ring ‘complex’ below the Pinnacle to celebrate seasonal harvest, sacred marriage, the elements and the Sky Ancestor spirits ………and, when the time was right, it was also a centre for initiates, male and female, to attend their ‘Nyirgi’ training for initiation through the First Rule; and ‘Magihyn‘ – second level initiation lore”…….

“The Bootheram of Burrajahee and Inneroogun the two dog spirit Sky Ancestors was taught to all ‘Nyirgi’  initiates…...it has many layers and lore metaphors…… and the beginning of the Songline was always told by the Headman of each area…and because it begins at Cooloon it was commenced by Joe Calhum [Cooloom]a Ngarakbul man”…..

“Old Joe was from the tribal clan on the river at Cooloon but he resided at Mulli Mulli Aboriginal Reserve near Woodenbong with my Great Grandparents, Euston Williams and Charlotte Brown… the old people had been sent to Mulli Mulli after colonial settlement took their ancestral lands and forced relocation from the coastal labour camps …many Calhum descendants live in Woodenbong still”…..

The Bootheram of Burrajahee and Inneroogun the two dog spirit Sky Ancestors teaches the first ‘Nyirgi’ Lore – “DON’T BE GREEDY”…it goes like this”….

Joe Culhum - Cooloon
Joe Culhum – Cooloon

“Where the north-eastern border of NSW & the south-eastern border of Qld meet lies the rugged MacPherson Range, and on this range there is a plateau known to the white man as Lamington Plateau…….. Many long years ago in the Dreamtime, in a very young world, there lived an old man and his nephew on the Lamington Plateau. The Old man and his nephew had two dogs of which they were very fond……The dogs were named Burrajahnee and Inneroogun”….

“One day Burrajahnee and Inneroogun saw a kangaroo.  They chased it down the side of the plateau.  When the old man and his nephew saw the dogs chasing the kangaroo, they called out to them… “Burrajahnee and Inneroogun, come back to us!”……

“The dogs took no notice for they were excited by the chase.  Some people from a tribe that lived near the plateau also saw the dogs chasing the kangaroo…..  When they saw the kangaroo running towards the lagoon, they placed two nets in the pathway…….. The kangaroo was big and strong.  He got through the first net, he got through the second net, jumped into the lagoon and turned into a bunyip; and there he lives to this day”….

Koorumbyn - Kangaroo“Burrajahnee and Inneroogun also got through the first net, but they were caught in the second one…… The people who had tried to catch the kangaroo killed the two dogs, saying to each other “they will serve us as food as well as the Kangaroo…… We shall light a fire and cook them”….  And they did”.

“When the dogs failed to return the old man and nephew were sad, because they knew some evil had befallen them……..  They went to look for their dogs, and tracked them down the side of the plateau to the place where the fire had been lit, calling out “Burrajahnee and Inneroogun come back to us”….. Great was the anger of the old man and his nephew when they found their dogs had been killed and cooked…….  The old man sent a big cyclone to destroy the people who had killed Burrajahnee and Inneroogun”…..

“The uncle and the nephew picked up the dogs, wrapped them in bark, and carried them reverently back to the plateau…….. Whenever any part of the dogs, such as a foreleg or foot, fell off as they were being carried back to the plateau the placed was named after it and is known by the same name to this day”…..

“On the way back to the plateau they came to a waterfall……  They climbed to the top and sat down and rested placing their burdens on the ground…… One of them faced in one direction and the other facing in the opposite direction….. There the remains of the two dogs Burrajahnee and Inneroogun were turned into stone”…..

“Those two dogs are still to be seen at the top of the waterfall. One facing in one direction and the other in the opposite direction”……

“The stone dogs are sacred – No man dares to touch them….. To the tribe of people who are descendants of the old man the stone dogs will always be sacred, and the part of the plateau were they began to chase the kangaroo is called Goonbundah”…..

“Stan Williams was my Grandfather and Charlotte Brown, was his Ngarakbul mother from Tweed Heads;  and his tribal uncle, was Joe Calhoun…..These are all first settlers names, not Origine’ Skinlore-names – they had to take the settlers names to survive “……

“The last initiated Ngarakbul and Githabul tribal Elders  taught Stan  all the Feathered Serpent Bootheram Lore and invested in him the preservation of the custodial knowledge and traditions of our Origine’ people, after British occupation” ……

“ Stan Williams held the Bootheram Lore intact …….The same lore has been faithfully passed down in my family since the beginning of the Dreamtime …This is how our grandparents taught us to love and care for country, and each other,  and to continue the sacred rituals to ‘increase’ the animals, plants and sacred waters….. To Love and Protect all of the gifts given to us by the Great Spirit “…….

“That’s the Lore my Grandfather taught me “……

Wiangaree – The Border Ranges & the Pinnacle are central significant sacred sites of the Rainbow Serpent Skinlore Kinship’s for Australia

“I want to share with you creation Lore about the Sky Ancestors – the Wiangarre – SEVEN SISTERS and the  Grandmother Rainbow Serpent – ‘Warrazum’….  Today these sacred djurebil places are know as the Border Ranges National Park and the Pinnacle Lookout,  but to my people they are still known as sacred places of Ceremony, Increase, Fertility and Skinlore Marriage Lore ritual…..sacred marriage, made in heaven,  which links all the tribal territories together “……

“Before it was named the Border Ranges National Park , the same forest was known to the Origine’ peoples as Wiangarie , which means SEVEN SISTERS in Ngarakbul Githabul dialect….and the Pinnacle Hill, or ‘Coowarragum’, is one of our most sacred creation djurebil sites of these rites”…

“Tribes would travel from all over the ancestral estates to attend star ceremonies at the Coowarragum Lore Ring ‘complex’ to celebrate marriage, seasonal harvest, the elements and the Sky Ancestor spirits ………and, when the time was right, it was also a centre  for initiates, male and female,  to attend their ‘Nyirgi’ training for initiation through the First Rule; and ‘Magihyn‘ – second level initiation lore”……..

The Border Ranges was originally the Wiangarie State Forest

” The Wiangaree forest became the Border Ranges National Park in 1982 .. included on the World Heritage list as part of the Central Eastern Rainforest Reserves of Australia,  along with many other major rainforest stands in the north-east N.S.W and south-east Queensland cross border region”……..

“Though the Border Ranges has been acknowledged as being a portion of the Githabul ancestral estate, through the process of Native Title, it still has never had its ancient sacredness recognised and restored ……and only joint managements rights were given to the Githabul, not full tenure, as we had sort…….and now our ancestral estates djurebil sites still remain severed either side of the state border”…..

“The creation of the New South Wales and Queensland Border by the Commonwealth severed the ancestral lore most effectively…….. The Rainbow Serpent Traditions, Lore’s and Customs were forced underground to survive.  They are still being ignored by the authorities today…which is a great shame”……

Wollumbin [Wallumban] the Caterpillar Skinlore Dreaming of the Origine’ Bird Tribes

“The whole of the Wollumbin Caldera rim has many significant Feathered Serpent [Bird Tribe] Starlore, Marriage Lore, Increase and initiation ritual sites, which we call ‘Djurebil’.……Though scattered throughout the landscape, our most sacred creation Sky Ancestor Lore Bootheram’s span either side of the created border.

Half in the Border Ranges National Park in New South Wales and the other half in the Lamington National Park  in Queensland…This was a very deliberate action by colonial authorities to eradicate evidence of prior occupation.  Targeting our most powerful djurebil Bootheram sites “….

“This action is very hurtful, ‘barahynwena’, to our true Origine’ culture and identity and our connection to the other ancestral tribes of Australia who are also becoming dispossessed from their Rainbow Serpent Lore “…..

“As the first site of the Sky Ancestors creation in Australia, we are responsible for maintaining the true culture of this continent – protecting our land and waters and all its inhabitants, just as our old people did since the dreamtime ”

“In the beginning time Warazum the Rainbow Serpent and Wiangarie the Seven Sisters  created and seeded the landscape in readiness for Nguthungulli, our Father, to bring us the lore”…..The Ancestors travel across the sky every evening, just as they have done since the ‘alcheringa’, which is our word for ‘the beginning ‘…

These important Sky Ancestors are visible in the night sky and are sacred to the Women….their Water-lore…. and also to the men, their totemic social lore and obligations….And  though the authorities change the names of our sacred places on maps and put unnatural borders where no borders have ever been, our lore remains unbroken”

“Way back in the dreaming our ancient volcano landscapes were covered in a gigantic forest of huge Hoop Pine , Red Cedar and Ti-trees trees – the whole land was lush and green and abundant”…..Toonumbar_National_Park_Murray_Scrub_January_1995

“This primordial landscape was the home of ancient Carpetsnake and Goanna  clans, our Ngarakbul and Githabul ancestors….this same sacred land has been our home ever since our dreamtime creator Nguthungulli [God] made the lore to align with the land which the Rainbow Serpent had carved in the ‘alcheringa‘…….

“My Great Grandfather, Euston William’s was the husband of Charlotte Brown…..”Euston and Charlotte had nineteen children …Their eldest Son was Stan Williams, and Stan is my Grandfather. His tribal name was Duroom which means “Custodian of Knowledge and Lore” .

Mount Brown is where all the birds got together and spoke their language….  They was talking Gullyval, Muli, Gidabal,  and this giant prehistoric bird came up and frightened them…….Parrot flew down there to Evans Head, that’s how there came to be the Bandjalang tribe……  And the wounded parrot flew back near Lismore and then out to Casino….. You can see a gully there, and they reckon the waters blood red, where he settled……..Turkey flew to Yar-Birrain, Mount Warning, got wounded, and  claimed the territory for the Ngarakbul“……and Pelican, Jongurra, flew to the Razorback Mountain, called out to all the ancestor birds and invited them to the first ‘nahrean’, which means dance, or corroboree”….

“Razorback Mountain, is a long mountain ridge running up to the Lamington Plateau through the Lost World portion of the Lamington National ParkJongurranahrean (DHUNGURA_NGARIAN) is the Pelican Dancing Ground.”…..

Mount Razorback - lamington National park“Today’s Tweed Byron Aboriginal Corporations in Tweed Shire Council area have incorrectly claimed Observatory Hill at Tweed Heads as being this ancestral site … Ancient lore becomes lost and culture fades when ‘proper- way’ transference of lore through Kinship Skinlore and Ritual is ignored…….This type of ignorance allows corruption to flourish and endorses cultural genocide ”….Tweed Shire NSW Signage - Razorback

God”….

“I want to share with you this Bootheram of the first ritual corroboree of the Bird Tribes in the Dreamtime …..“it is called “Joongarnarian – The Pelican Dancing Ground …..it sounds like a simple fable, but to the higher initiate it is the Lore of how our very first tribes were created “…….

Mr james Morgan - Dyrabaa tribe - Githabul Country
James Morgan – Dyrabaa Tribe – Githabul Country

“This Bootheram was told to my Grandfather Stan Williams,’ Duroom’ ……his Elder, James Morgan of the Dyrabaa tribe in Githabul country, told him….. in 1957 it was collected from Mr. Morgan by Mildred Norledge and Published in 1968 by AH & AW REED – in  Aboriginal Legends from Eastern Australia by  Professor Elkin – Emeritus Professor of Anthropology – from the University of Sydney who knew my old people and served on the same Aboriginal board as Old Uncle James – the Aboriginal Welfare Board of New South Wales  ……

James Morgan was a full-blooded Githabul Ngarakbul representative on that board ……. This was his djurebil, his sacred lore story, which he held for his land and his people

It was also broadcast on Radio……Joongarnarian …It goes like this”……

“…..In the time which is the Bootheram, or the Dreamtime, there lived an old Pelican who played on a plateau…the name of the plateau was Joongarnarian, which means “where the pelican played”.  The corroboree ring of the pelican was on the plateau of Joongarnarian.”

“In the Bootheram all the birds were the same colour but one day they decided that it would be much better if they were not all the same, so they painted themselves in different colours.  From that time they have kept the colours that they painted themselves on the plateau of Joongarnarian”….

“The Crow painted himself black.”

“The paint that he used was made from burnt bark of the Bloodwood tree.”

“The magpie painted himself black too, but he also used ‘dullong’ or white clay and he became a bird with black and white feathers.”

”The parrots adorned themselves with bright paints of many colours….. And all the birds chose the colours they liked best…..

Then the birds gathered together for a corroboree on the plateau of Joongarnarian.”….

”One day, Old Man Pelican, who was very fat, was walking away from the corroboree ring when he heard someone laughing.

He turned around to see who was laughing and saw that it was the crow

The crow was laughing at him, laughing at the way he walked because he was so fat….”…

”Because the crow had laughed at him Old Man Pelican picked up a piece of the dullong and threw it at the Crow…..”…..

”The piece of clay hit the Crow in the eye and to this day the white in the eye of the crow can be seen where Old Man Pelican hit him……”
